Hand Fed Coal Stove: DS Machines DS-1600 Hot Air Circulator

Post by I'm On Fire » Mon. Jun. 27, 2011 2:43 pm

Gotta say, that when I shut down my wood stove during the 2009/10 winter for the summer I didn't look at it again until a week before I was going to fire it up. The rest of that time was spent in the driveway, splitting, stacking and sometimes moving the wood pile around.

I shut the DS-1600 down mid May. Same day I shut it down I cleaned it out. Vacuumed it, steel brushed certain areas, disconnected it from the chimney and put two "Moisture Remover" tubs in it. Then I went top-side and cleaned the chimney and capped it.

I look at it everyday. I open the door (yes, all the doors are cracked open) and peak inside. I just took delivery of my first ton of Nut from American yesterday and I can honestly say, I can not wait to hook it back up and fire it up.

My first season of burning coal while a huge learning curve and I had some ups and downs was a blast. I have never been warmer and wish it'd get cold already so I can fire it back up.

What say you?

Now with all that 'free time' you can tighten up the house a bit more...
But yes the summer is rough...

If you upgrade to a stoker boiler you can peak at the fire year-round.

When I used to run a hand-fed stove letting it go out was like saying goodbye to an old friend. The first month was especially bad, when we would get a few cold nights and the floors were cold.

If I confess that I am looking into another type of coal stove that I absolutely have no need for but just because it is different and fun to play with. Can I then please join your "I'm a coal screwball" club? Forget being asked to become a Freemason. Psst, I hear from a friend at Freetown that Fred sings to his Hitzer at night --- shhhhh, it will be our little secret.

Summer is always painting season for me. One side a year, scraped, and repainted. I've been doing just about everything but that! Yesterday I was looking at my barn door and thinking that I'll have a go at building a new one since the bottom is getting a bit pootchie. Already did new steps, a bulkhead door set, and I have a deck on the second floor that need to come off so I can reroof the porch. Anything but painting!

Unfortunately tightening the house is not going to happen. Nor is finishing my son's room. Money is all but non-existent this summer. Hell, my wife and I are scraping money together just to buy two more tons of coal before the prices go up in August.

We were talking about a coal fired furnace or boiler for this summer as well. But, that is also not happening.

Hmmm ... 8-ball club. :gee: There's something awfully familiar about that name ... (sniff) ... I can't seem to (sniff) put a finger on it (sniff sniff) ... Oh crap wait! Strike that from the record!

I don't know about you guys, but there's nothing rough about summer over here. No need to dress in 15 layers, so I get out of the house quicker & spend less time doing laundry, I'm warm all the time, there's no need to spend all my hard earned money on fuel to stay warm, I can stay up later & not have to deal with the stove - no loading & no ash .. then there's motorcycle rides, atv rides, drinking outside under the stars ....

I'll take summer any day, thank you very much!
