First FastCat thank you for all of the information.
Question: When my bi-metal unit closes it bangs shut, I wear a hearing-aid, without it I can hear it close. How should I adjust it?
I quit burning wood after 18 years.
Great forum thanks Den.

The reason it is banging shut is due to a good draft, when the flapper closes just so far the draft has enough power to suck the flapper closed with a bang. This is normal and I hanen't found any way to stop the noise without holding the flapper open a tad which is defeating the purpose of it, to control the stove temp as the draft changes. I use the slide on the ash door also just cracking it to what looks like a quarter moon at the holes and this helps the banging but does not eliminate it, just not quit as loud.Den034071 wrote:First FastCat thank you for all of the information.

When I was using our Hitzer, I didn't mind the tapping sound as all I had to do was listen and I knew it was working. If I didn't hear it I had to take a look and make sure it wasn't stuck. So to me the noise was a good thing.

yea, I'm with cntbill. Every now & again my flap,no not mine, the Hitzers ya damn fools, will get to tap, tap, tapping & I either open or close it a smidge. It's gotta be real, real windy for that to happen.

My Hitzer used to do the same thing. Tap Tap Tap...never bothered me, and if I had been into some of that fine Canadian beer I was known to dance "to the tune" in the basement.

Just a thought, could you furnace glue some gasket material to the flapper or opening to soften the blow when it closes?
I wish I had a bi-metal air control on my stove to automate the draft. One of the refinements I lack having bought an inexpensive used stove. I read a post where someone added one, but I haven't wanted to put in the effort, nor drill holes in the stove..

Funny, I bought an inexpensive used stove & it had a bi-metal air control--of course at the time, I really didn't really know what the hell a bi-metal air control was I really lucked out with the 50-93 Hitzer and thanks to this FORUM--I've even got a grip on running the old girl. by the way--negative on the furnace cement & gasket material:( just learn to dance like Rob suggested
