EFM 520-HighBoy Install

EFM 520-HighBoy Install

PostBy: 009to090 On: Sun Jul 31, 2011 8:56 pm

My fully refurbished EFM520 HighBoy arrived a day ago, thanks to a couple other Coal Berners!
I also got an inventory of extra parts, so if something breaks, I'm not scrambling to get a replacement part that may be hundreds of miles away.
The installation project will require more time than I had orginally estimated, as the "Utility" room in the house, was deemed "too cramped". As I was going to have to add more Structure to the Utility room floor, anyway, to support the weight of the HighBoy, we just decided to add a new "Boiler & Coal Bin" addition to the side of the house. Soooo, the HighBoy will sit in the Workshop storage room until the house addition is completed.
In the meantime, heres some Pics of the HighBoy....

Looks good! I like the larger cleanout on the early models; my dad's is a '54 with a round door.

Where did you get all the cast iron radiators? :jawdrop:

In my opinion, EFM has not made a nicer looking 520 since they quit making the Highboy with that lift off front cover. Classy... 8-)

Plan on removing those reducer bushings from the return ports...I have installed two 520's and got burned by a leaky bushing on each one. It is easy to install fresh ones with good tape/dope when the boiler is in the shop...but when it is all piped it is a different story. Black RTV or Teflon tape & GRRIP pipe dope is the way to go.

I already got a tractor-trailer load of UAE's finest, back in June. A mix of rice/buc. No problems getting a trucking company to get me NEPA coal and deliver it here.
I'm heating 3100sq ft house, with 11 1/2ft ceilings, and a 2700 sq ft work shop with 12ft ceilings.
But I think I'll have enough BTUs left over to heat my pool

I understand the radiators came from a recent house remodel job, and the owner did not want Rads anymore!
I am looking for a few more of this style, if anyone is getting rid of them.

Consider getting the radiators powder coated before you install them. Power coating makes them look good forever, no more trying to get them painted were you can't really get to.

Then you have PA.'s finest, no need to worry. :D What did a t t load run you with shipping per ton ? You have a bin to keep all of the load in ?

$188 per ton, delivered cost. So $150 per ton for the coal, and $38 per ton for delivery. I thought that was a good price for a 450 mile trip :D
The Coal-shed is in need of repairs, so I dumped the load on a large tarp outside the shed, until I can get around to rebuilding it. Covered the pile over with another olive green tarp to make it less conspicuous. The neighbors think its a kids "Bouncy-trampoline-like" toy :shh:

Congratulations on the EFM 520, the Rolls Royce of coal boilers!

Seeing the trailer full of radiators got me thinking on how to estimate the output of a radiator. Jim from Patriot Coal has a good pdf file on their website: http://www.patriotcoal.net/download-res ... iators.pdf
