There may be some common programming language in them especially for programs utilizing specific hardware like the graphics card but they still have to be ported to each OS. Window, Mac and Linux are all basically running on the same hardware but that doesn't mean programs are all going to be available for each OS.

Apple in the past has been mostly been used by professionals in particular graphic arts and video. Photoshop has always been available on the Mac and in the professional world Mac was/is the dominant machine. Same with video, Final Cut Pro is top tier and only available on the Mac. The problem with that is you can't make huge amounts of money serving just professionals.

I know, my ex and her sister and brother-in-law worked in the graphic arts field, as did my father. As such, they all wanted Macs. We had an IMac for awhile. And I got to hear about the problems they had with them. Just as much as I've ever had with a PC.

And I got to hear them complain not only at having to pay far more for the same level machine as a PC, but also every time they wanted to buy programs the bulk of which are for PC's, they complained about the higher cost of the Mac versions of those PC programs.

Plus my four kids had Macs in their class rooms all through school, up until NY state offered to buy the school all new computers for the class rooms and for a computer lab (low income school district aid). Then, after years of using Macs, the school insisted on only PC's. Reason was the kids would be far more likely to encounter PC's when they got out into the job market.

Kinda like paying Mercedes prices and always having to buy high-test gas, for a Chevy, or a Ford, when all you need is a decent car to get to the store. ;)

All I know is, this is my 3rd PC in 14 years, and it will be my LAST. I've got nothing to lose but a little money in trying out a Mac. It can't be any worse than these damn PC's!

This thing is worse than ever. Had the thing melt down, lost everything, did a complete reboot, and it still sucks! Even picked up a few new quirks along the way! When you restart from sleep mode, I can't move my mouse for almost 3 minutes! Can press all the buttons you want - the damn cursor will not move! Then, on occasion, if I right click a pic to rename, I'll get a spinning wheel for anywhere from 4 seconds to 2 minutes! Internet seems slower than ever, but watching the blinking lights on the DSL modem, and the fact that everyone in the neighborhood has fast internet, tells me it's my computer.

I can't wait to fill this POS full of LEAD!!! :rambo2:

Presumably a USB mouse? Try this smitty.

Type device manager in the search box and click it.

Down the bottom you'll find a listing for USB. Ckick it to display USB devices.

Click each one and if it has a tab for power management tab uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Smitty,

By complete reboot I assume you mean a clean install of windows correct? By a clean install I mean a format and reinstall. Sometimes if you load windows over the top of itself and saving your files you have problems like you explained. If you did a clean install did you load all the ms updates? both critical and optional? Sometimes the optional updates contain updated drivers that your system needs. Make sure you do this, if this is all complete and and you run disk cleanup and defrag then symptoms are the same I would open the case and see what manufacture the hard drive is made by then go to their website and download there diagnostic tools and test the hdd. Run the extended test and post back the results

Could you post the name brand and model of the computer and any thing else you know about its specs, like witch windows, amount of memory installed

You shouldn't be tearing up computers every 4 years or so

Time to upgrade that 8088 !

Luckily, the machines today are relatively cheap ... remember paying 300 bucks for a calculator?

I looked at them all - only found 2 with that power management tab, and the boxes were not checked off. Thanks for the tip though.

Format .... probably the problem since I don't know wtf that is, nor how to do it. Guess I'm going to have to deal with it. I'm not going through that process again - took me weeks to get this damn thing back online. I'd rather have a quad root canal .... seriously!! :| I appreciate the help though.

I'm curious as well.
4 years with mine so far..zero issues. I am running Windows on it as well for Excel and a Windows-based version of Quicken that I use. I have Windows sequestered in Parallels so it can't hurt anything.
