I wonder how/if this will effect the price of residential coal usage.

Over the next 18 months, the Environmental Protection Agency will finalize a flurry of new rules to curb pollution from coal-fired power plants. Mercury, smog, ozone, greenhouse gases, water intake, coal ash—it’s all getting regulated. And, not surprisingly, some lawmakers are grumbling.
Industry groups such the Edison Electric Institute, which represents investor-owned utilities, and the American Legislative Exchange Council have dubbed the coming rules “EPA’s Regulatory Train Wreck.” The regulations, they say, will cost utilities up to $129 billion and force them to retire one-fifth of coal capacity. Given that coal provides 45 percent of the country’s power, that means higher electric bills, more blackouts and fewer jobs. The doomsday scenario has alarmed Republicans in the House, who have been scrambling to block the measures. Environmental groups retort that the rules will bring sizeable public health benefits, and that industry groups have been exaggerating the costs of environmental regulations since they were first created.

i just saw this on drudge report . I think obama is going for broke now . thursday he basicly gave the illegals amnesty , and halted deportation . he knows he doesn't stand a chance to be re-elected so he's jaming threw regulations that he couldn't get threw congress . I also think he is hoping for riots so he can institute MARSHALL LAW . look at the videos on youtube about this . he may get his wish . HOW MUCH MORE ARE WE GOING TO TAKE ?????

that was then this is now . there are 20 million+ here today . 9-20% unemployment . I don't care who is president R or D they are all the same !!! they are owned by the bankers . I work in construction . they and the poeple that hire them are cutting everyones throats . our prices have droped by at least 33% and still have very hard time getting work . the only thing saving us is we work almost solely on high end homes . it's a good thing the rich people still have money to spend . I LOVE RICH PEOPLE . they keep a roof over my kids head and food in their stomachs . this country doesn't need more low income earners or leeches . I heard somewhere before anyone earning less than 60.000 $ per year actual cost the country money . we can't afford this . they don't pay taxes anyway . if they do that is illegal . can't work with no s.s. card . can't pay tax with no ss card . honestly I think about using mafia tactics and going around breaking legs with a baseball bat . the courts won't do it . this is not a nation of laws anymore . unless you are a white male trying to feed his family and keep a roof over their head .

Your absolutly right, it was also a then when Ike got rid of them all. But then the wealthy on the West Coast wanted the cheap labor so they allowed them back. Just like cockroaches they spread & multiply so we housed them & fed them gave them free health care that our own legal citizens never got so here we are. It has become a catch22 they now make up an extremely large portion of the population (legally). We don't have the money to deport, secure the border or most anything else, so if you start a case by case basis & keep the workers that then pay tax it's a big jump over the mostly other ones on welfare. I have said on other subjects that now would be the best time in history for strict welfare reform, simply because we can't afford it. Heck they would even have to deport Selma Hyate or whatever her name is, we have illegals serving in the armed forces, we as voters have allowed it to get this far & it wasn't in three years or one sided. Hey, if they were working cheap & making the big guys more money it was fine, we got what we allowed nothing more nothing less.

i'm willing to pay for a few oneway tickets . no joke . I will even pay for one for selma . these idiots don't think of the consiquences of having illegals in the military . what happens if we go to war with what ever country they are from . who's side will they be on . they just ran into this problem with a muslim . he wouldn't go to afganistan . said he couldn't kill muslims and he is american . I don't buy the argument that we can't afford to deport them . we can afford to keep them . if it comes down to them or my family they lose .

The coal plant thing has been discussed before, most that are going to be shut (even if allowed to go a bit longer) knew a long time ago that it was coming. It's the Clean Air Act that is doing it, I'm not up on the legal end of things but I believe that it would take Congress to do something about it.
As for the one that refused to go because he is Muslim, where would you deport an American to? Military prisons are nice this time of year, in my opinion he is just like the scum that used to run to Canada to get out of being drafted except he joined to get the money & benefits instead.

It will make bituminous a lot cheaper for homeowners and possibly lower the price of anthracite. There are very few power plants that use anthracite, it is just to expensive. It is mostly used as home heating fuel and activated carbon for the water filtration so I don't see any real impact on anthracite.JJLL wrote:I wonder how/if this will effect the price of residential coal usage.

my in-laws live in new bruswick canada . they are or have shut down a coal plant there . it was built right at the mine . strip mine bit coal . I don't care how they get the coal or make the electricity . aslong as we get affordable energy . most canadians have bought the b.s. global warming . the crazies keep coming up with new reasons to add new taxes and fees . to bring the middle class down to the poor and the rich richer . they have set up a carbon trading exchange . glenn beck played someone that said it would be a 10 trilion$ business . built on trading F$%^ING AIR . these people think we are that stupid . they are still going forward with this even after they have been caught lying and making up the numbers . I don't care about old so called dirty plants . what makes them dirty . show me some one that has been affected by this so called dirty air . what happened to all the acid rain and ozone talk . the same goes for lead paint . that stuff was great . it lasted for ever . show me someone affected by lead paint . it's all b.s. just trying to scare everyone . I don't beleive a damn thing any government tells me anymore . they all are lying to us . put the soldier in military prison . knowing what I know now I don't blame people for running to canada . anyone that goes in to the military now is playing russian rulette . they (government) don't care about their lives . they are tools . we are getting in to more and more wars . we are not the worlds police . look up the military industrial complex . the banks are making huge money along with the contractors

The last two posts I think well illustrate the frustration most of us feel confronted with a mindless bureaucracy operating partly on bad science and partly on another get rich scheme. So much of what government does seems to be governed by those principles, not just coal related issues.
The country was founded on the dynamic of the freedom to fail, for without that freedom how can you have the freedom to succeed?

as long as there are people resourceful enough to use anthracite coal as a means to heat their home, then there will be a market and a demand for it. even if just small mines stay open, I am not worried about running out of hard coal . Moving forward with newer technologies, even with the costly mistakes that come with them, is what America is about, leading the way forward with " cleaner" electrical generation. electric plants use bituminous coal anyway.

no i'm sorry but america is about FREEDOM . show me proof that something is wrong with any coal . maybe sum mining accidents . that happens in all fields of energy production !!! coal is the most abondant fuel source . highest BTU's . cheepest form of energy . going to wind and solar is going back to the 18th century . not going forward . we should be free to choose . if you want to use wind and solar thats great . don't try and force my to do it . don't use my tax dollars to subsidize the wind and solar to try and make it close to affordable . let them compete without any sibsidizes . wind and solar have along way to go before they are affordable .

If every business had to operate without subsidies then we might just not be in this mess. Trouble is just about every huge project in this country gets federal money or matching funds, that's OK because they help the country & they come to an end when the project is done. Even with almost all contractors involved ripping off the Gov. it still ends unlike the ones to big oil & others that continue on even after they are profitable. More than likely at one time it was thought that the oil would never run out.
