Can anyone tell me if it is ok to put flagstone over the existing vents in my fireplace surround when I reface the whole wall/surround? I've obviously already put in a coal stove that vents up through the chimney-so it's not like I am using the fireplace for wood burning. Will covering the brick vents cause excess heat to build up, or do they have no effect on the stove, etc? :?

not a mason, but wouldn't you want them to get every last little bit of heat out of your insert?

As long as you insulate real well around the inside flue area where your pipe goes up, I would think you would want your existing vents for heat distributation--or not--it's your house & I'm sure you know what the vents do or don't do--as far as closing them up, I see no safety issues. :)

Have you tried the exhaust of a shop vac to see where the air blows to? If the air blows in around your insert it seems to me that would be an added benefit getting some of that "trapped" heat. Just a thought.

If these are the heat outlet vents, where do the vents get the cool air?

Are there holes like this near the hearth floor?

In a fireplace system, no cool air is needed except what is drawn in from the actual room. The heatolators are just a heat distribution add on--nothing fancy--heat rises & with the damper set properly, they work real well. Now I'm going back a bunch of yrs before the fans & other optional fancy crap offered today.More stuff to fail--throw away :(

All of the fireplaces I've seen had a hollow shaft on each side of the

fireplace opening, usually on the side or bottom of the hearth, to let

floor level air in and come out the upper vent slots,by gravity. I never

saw one with a fan but one could be installed.

If there is no inlet where does the air come from to be heated and

discharged out the upper slot opening?

We need a picture of the bottom of the hearth from the floor up.

There are no vent openings in the hearth section, only the 4 openings on the pictures. Thanks to all who have reponded to my question. :)

I will probably close the vents up since all that replied favor that there will be no issues doing so. The fireplace was built for a open wood fire, and I have a sealed unit with a ss pipe going straight up the chimney. I'll post pictures of the completed job. Now all I have to do is find the time

Finally finished the fieldstone work. Now all I have to do is make a coal fire.
