Dog got sprayed by skunk...

Dog got sprayed by skunk...

PostBy: Rob R. On: Wed Aug 24, 2011 11:26 pm

As if I didn't have enough things to do, tonight one of my dogs spotted a skunk on the lawn and really gave him hell. Naturally the skunk didn't like being bitten and shaken, so he sprayed our dog in the face. I got a "deskunk" recipe online (http://briansplace.ynt1.com/skunk.php) and washed the dog with the cocktail of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap. He smells A LOT better, but still pretty "skunky" . Any other suggestions to help get rid of the smell? I am going to give him a normal bath next with pet shampoo, but I'm open to suggestions.

Keep bathing him. As many times as you can. Even then, he'll probably still smell 'skunky' for 3 weeks after. It just takes time to wear off.
My wife washed our dog with the "skunk soap" from the vets. It was over-priced for what it did. Just keep using the "Home brew".
I feel for ya, ours aways used to get 'skunked'. He's gotten smarter in his old age though.
Yours will probably smell better if you let him roll around in some deer crap or something

lots of baking soda and dish soap work it into the fur, then a gallon or two of white vinegar poured over the dog untill he turns into a ball of foam, rinse, lather and repeat. follow up with a good scented conditioner and he should be mostly smell- free.

We used a shampoo specifically for skunks, it was purchased at Wal-Mart... really no choice there where to go 11 at night.

It worked great, she got it in the face. After about 2 or 3 applications and she dried off you had to get up close to where she was sprayed to smell it.

Dawn dishsoap is the best, same thing they use on animals & birds in oil spills. Skunk spray is an oil that it produces & dawn is the best at removing oil & it won't hurt the dog or it's coat.

Well, after a few scrub sessions with the baking soda/peroxide/Dawn mixture, and a follow up with straight Dawn, he smells a lot better. I wouldn't want him on the couch next to me, but at least it is tolerable to have him in the house.

It still stinks outside where the main event took place, but hurricane Irene should take care of that.

Tomato juice is the ticket.

Seems any solution that is mildly acetic will do the job, hence the tomato juice. We had one dog get skunked and happened to have a quart of tomato juice on hand, soaked her in it and let it stay on for awhile before we washed her off. It worked very well, except all her white fur was dyed orange. She was the strangest looking sable Shelty for a week or so.

We just had our local fox do the same thing to a skunk right outside my house a few weeks ago. Stunk the house up pretty good ... and all the windows were shut! I can imagine what the puppy smells like! :o

I don't have any tomato juice on hand, but I will pick some up on my next trip to the store.

Good news: I found the skunk next to my shop...DEAD. Only about 20' from where he was the night the dog got him, so he must have been "crunched" pretty good.

Been there, done that!

Even after getting through all the washings, it will be several weeks till it isn't noticeable...every time the dog get's wet the residual odor will be more noticeable till it's dry again.
