Well, Irene has changed her mind again. The official Dept of Navy forecast is calling for her to make a direct hit on Virginia Beach and then sort of head up the Chesapeake Bay. We are definitely in the cone. The forecast calls for sustained winds of 50 to 60 miles an hour and 6-8 inches of rain over the weekend. DK says for those of us who believes that bad things happen in 3s this is the 3rd and final event of this cycle. First we had the wild fires in the Great Dismal Swamp of southern VA - this rain should put those out. Then the earthquake and now flooding. It does make life interesting. We will batten the hatches and sit this one out at home. Lisa
Yeah, we are just on the fringe of the State of Emergency that was declared in NC, for Irene.
My sister lives in the middle of the Great Dismal swamp, and she has to drive thru smoke every day on the way to work. We live 100 miles west of there, and we get the smoke out this far, when the wind is right.
I just discovered the earthquake shook one of my little out-buildings enough, to move it 3 inches to one side of its footing. We also had a repaired crack in the plaster, by one of the fireplaces in the house. It has to be repaired again

I was getting ready to move everything out of the basement and ride things out at my in laws but with the new more western track, I think I can ride it out here. I don't mind the wind, I just don't need my house full of water.
Still kicking around the idea of sandbagging the garage door tomorrow though. I'm right in the middle of water and we are supposed to have an astronomical high tide Sunday so things could get wet in a hurry.

We just 3" of water in our fairly new building at work, on the 2nd floor! One of the roof drain lines (6 or 8"?) decided to break above the ceiling last night and a ton of water came in, then ran thru the floor to the first floor....what a mess! one guys cubicle took it the worst being directly under it! OF course, not part of the hurricane...being here in WNY

Yep, it isn't looking good for many of us, the forecast should be more definite by this time tomorrow. I'm getting plenty of gas for the generator tomorrow in case the pumps in the cellar start running and then the power shuts off, and extra beer.

I have gin, whiskey, rum, Southern Comfort, blackberry brandy, & even some absinthe .... oh & 3 cases of beer.
Off to fuel up the homestead tomorrow before panic sets in.
Getting pounded by t-storms right now - raining about 2" per hour!

I cleaned out the gutters and test started the diesel generator. Still need to clean an outside basement stairs drain of leaves. I'm on a hill so no flooding possible from any overflowing streams. My Lions and Lioness Club is having an all day bingo fundraiser on Saturday. I asked what are the plans if we need to cancel. I was sternly informed by the women that nothing stops all day bingo. It's held at a local fire hall. They have a big generator, we have food and cooks, so it should be an interesting time. I'm working the afternoon shift, I think I'll drive the pick up there, higher ground clearance.

Just watching N. Carolina doing a mandatory evac. & a little kid was shown whining "I don't want to be in the car for 6 hrs" my father woulda B-tch slapped me & thrown me in the back of the truck--maybe hog tied---awww the good old days. Enough going on there without having to listen to some sissy ass kid complaining. Yep, I have become that grumpy old man. I guess when you're raised by a Penna. State Trooper, that'll happen Crap, that was back when the good guys had rights!

Looks like Irene is even going to make it to my corner of NYS. They are calling for 60 MPH winds and 3-6 inches of rain, depending on exactly where the storm goes. Tomorrow I will refill my generator gas cans, and get a few cases of beer...never know how long this might last.
