Thanks everyone for your support and compassion. My Internet is out and I can only access via my phone. I would like to respond in greater detail when I can use my computer. Better today. Only crying half the time. :( it's like a gut punch.

Finally got my internet back. Here's a picture of my girl. All the support was very helpful. Thanks everyone for the posts and PM's. This has left a big hole in my heart. I've always been a nut about my dogs but Riley was truly special. She was so tuned in to me and my wife. She was never more than just a couple of feet away from one of us. She was in pain on Saturday but conducted herself with dignity. Although I'm heartbroken, I feel lucky to have had her in my life.

My other dog who came to us as a puppy when Riley was 5 is really missing her. She's never known life here without Riley.
Life goes on. And oh yea, there was a hurricaine too. We made out ok here. Just lost internet and about a million sticks, branches and leaves.

What a sweetie! I'm glad I had a chance to meet her, if only briefly.
I had a Golden, rescued her, she was probably a few days away from death when I got her. She finally had a good home and lived to 13. When it was clear she was suffering I had to make the decision. She and my Labrador were always together, after she was gone my Lab began to decline, 2 1/2 weeks later I had to euthanize him. It was a terrible time.
But life goes on...

When I got the 2 black puppies I posted pix of, I already had my big 120lbs golden--he raised the puppies--when his hips finally totally went & I put him down, the pups spent about a week mopeing around his grave site. Now the puppies are 12 yrs old & both just crazier then all get out. ck, get another puppie for that other dog--I'd bet it will grow on you in time. ;) Memories never go away.

I am sorry for your loss. What a beautiful girl. I have lost many pets through the years, still hard to think about them. We have five right now, dreading the day anything happens to one of them. Again I am sorry for your loss.

Hi Terry, I feel your loss. I'm still dog-less since last November. I still miss my canine friends.. but I'm spending too much time away
from the farm to raise and take care of a pup right now..

My last two buddies: They are both burried out back, overlooking the lake, where the each spent hours with me when I needed 'down time'.

Take care my friend, it will get less painfull with time.

Thanks Brother Dave and Greg. Better each day. Still miss her like crazy but I'm getting by. It doesn't help that I prefer most dogs to most people.

Sorry for your loss Terry, and I agree people can be a PITA, too bad more of them don't have the simplicity and loyalty of a dog. :)

My heart goes out to you for the loss of your special friend. We had to put our 18 yr. old cat down the day after Easter this year, and found it was the hardest thing we ever did. It felt like someone was ripping my heart right out. As time passes I think of reasons, explanations, and why it had to be that way. I don't have answers, only it was time, he was old, I didn't want him to suffer any longer and I am thankful for having the opportunity of taking care of him and considering him our companion for all those years. After the fact, my friend sent me something I would like to share with you, not to make you feel worse, but maybe better, not right away, but in time.

So sorry for your loss. We had to put our rescued Rottie down in December. I still miss him terribly. It does get easier though as time goes by. I am still finding his hair in the oddest places as though he left them behind to remind me that he'll always be with me.
