Hope you guys don't mind pics, cause I sure like taking 'em of that steam boiler.

Tidied up a bit in the boiler room. Got a little oiling station, finally organized my tools a bit and kicked my feet up a little while at my reading/thinking station.

Just wait till you hook up your DHW....Is it possible to have a 360 degree smile??? Unlimited HOT showers with no worries of running out of hot water...Wait till your utility bills show up...then youll actually SEE the difference. Welcome to the axeman family...and nice job on the install. I see youve got some really shiny pennies there with that pipeing...I was worth every cent...every drop of sweat....busted knuckles.... Did you get the comment "youre changing over to coal????" wait till one of then complains about their bills...then you can let out a big laugh!!!!!

I think my Honeywell S400B timer is not working. I have two pins in it set all the way in. There is power to it and is wired per AA schematic yet it does not run. I will need it for summer DHW. Does anyone have instructions on how to operate it?

Firewodman, yes, I got that comment. Look who's laughing now. Already two friends expressed real interest in getting coal stoker boilers.

When you say it doesn't run...do you mean primarily, the clock motor doesn't advance? or the load isn't being switched?

Mc, the clock does not advance nor does it switch or cycle. I think its because the clock dial does not advance. I took the pins out of the dial, and to be honest, I'm having a difficult time getting them back into the dial.

I'm at a loss how to set this thing. The inner case under the dial refers to different color pins. I've seen others with more pins. What gives with these timers? Also, I've heard that if the timer malfunctions while in cycle that the boiler can stay in a fire mode. How can this be if it is wired to aquastat, presuretrol etc?

By the way, on the last pic, isn't the boiler room a nice place to be? Do you think the uninsulated 4 inch drop down header might have anything to do with this????

The two black wires coming from the rear are the timer motor. Connect them to an extension cord and plug it in. If the timer runs it may be wired improperly. If it doesn't, it's junk.

The timer is wired to over ride the other controls, it powers the motor directly according to AA's drawings in both hot water and steam applications.
I have 4 pins you can have, my timer died a long time ago, I doubt it will need them.

Ok, I'm starting to figure this out. The unit seems to function in that I can get it to make and break. The white and black arms on the left of the photo below are the actuating arms I believe. The white arm when pulled upward seems to click into a set position. When it is then flipped back downwards the boiler fires. For the black arm it seems it also sets in the upward position but when it flips back down it shuts off the boiler. I was able to get the pins back on the dial and I can see where one of the pin's tabs that protrude from the back of the dial when mounted will trip the white arm and the other pin's tab is located to trip the black arm due to their location from the center of axis. It seems like more is needed because if the dial only spins in one direction, lets say counter clockwise the pin tabs will only flip the arms one way. Hence, does the dial change directions after it flips an arm? For instance, the white arm needs to be set by bringing it to the up position. It then needs to be snapped back to the lower position whereupon it fires the boiler. Likewise, the black pin needs two movements as well, up and down, to stop the boiler.

I have yet to see the little white gear rotate so perhaps I am not seeing all there is with this switch / timer. It is difficult with no instructions to follow.

I will keep trying but can any one who uses this switch please explain how they are set and operate.

If the little white gear won't turn when powered up, the clock motor is gone. There is nothing wrong with the switch itself, the timer just doesn't run. The pins set an on and off cycle. One will trip it on and the next in line will trip it off. Where you put the pins will determine what your start and stop time will be. Some people set two pins, some four. Generally the start stop cycles are in the two/four minute range.
