Just back from a business trip so I can post some pics.

Here is the 1 horse motor. I'm heading now to see if I can return it. I'd like to get one of the 'farm duty' motors at Grainger's for about half the price.

Finished painting the base and most of the brackets etc. Decided on flat black as a color.

Looks great so far. Are you going to install a new tankless coil?

What size is that tapping in the top of the boiler?? 4 inch!?

Thanks, and yes I have a new coil. I'll take some pics today.

It is a 4 inch supply pipe. I'm designing a 4 inch drop down header for my near boiler piping as well. Want nice dry steam for the one pipe steam system in my house. Lots of work to do as I have to pour a footing in my basement for both the boiler and the coal bin. I'm going to put the boiler together once I get it in basement to make everyone's life a little easier when bringing it down.

I like that picture too, the old wood boiler was really roaring that day.

Four inch drop header...that will be a thing of beauty when you are done. I hope you have some good 36" pipe wrenches, and probably some cheater pipes to go along with them. 4" is tough to handle, and not many places carry the fittings. The steam guys where I work use Loctite 567 thread sealant on the big fittings. It is more expensive than your average pipe dope, but they said it has proven to be a good product.

OK, I love a good project and this seems to be a beauty, but nobody has
asked the first thing that came to my mind.
What the hell are you going to heat with this unit ? You can heat
a 4000 sq ft house with all the windows open with that thing.

I had good luck at my electric motor dealer. Explained the situation to them and was able to return the 1 hp motor for a 1/2 hp. Saved a good chunk of change (Firewoodman, this will help defray the cost of the 4 inch header pipe!) and got a motor intended for HVAC purposes. I switched over the pulleys and wiring.

A big house with steam heat. I can't think of a better application for an AA than a steam system. When that thing gets the "call to duty", a lot of coal comes to life in very short order.

I have a 3" drop header on mine w/ a 3" ball valve...couple of tee and reducers(comming 2' off the top of the boiler) and I spent close to 5 beans just on that stuff alone!! It was worth every penny....and I get to laugh at the gas company every month!!!

Firewoodman, I had seen the pics of your header when you put them up and you did a great job! What type of main vents and what type radiator vents do you have? Also, why do you have a valve on that supply pipe to the header?

I use the 3/4NPT main vents from hd. also a mixture of vents that where installed in the house when we bought it...I modeled my install after the illustrations I read in a couple of books from Dan Hoolahan(great books)...He recomends the ball valve to build pressure in the boiler to pressure test for leaks, aids in cleaning out the 'mud leg" when you add detergent to the system....clean dry steam!!! I really recomend reading those books I mentioned, really gives you thorough understanding of steam systems.
