First year buying bulk. My coal has small chunks of wood in it, about the size of your thumb with a black patina. What's going on? My bagged anthracite has always been clean. I have no idea who my supplier ordered from. Thanks in advance.

What happens is they might be stripping in an area that had an old mine, the wood is from the old support beams.
When they process the coal the first stage still has humans picking out large rocks, wood or anything else they can find. They get one piece in there and once it goes through the crusher it turns into a million pieces. It's impossible to remove after that because the next process involves separating the smaller rock from the coal. They use a menzies cone which uses a mixture of water and magnetite that is swirling around, the coal(and wood) floats to the top, the rock sinks and is discharged out the bottom.

I find bits and chunks of wood in my bagged Kimmel's coal. Never found any rock. I don't pay much attention to the wood, it goes right into the hopper or through the loading door if its too large and gets burned with the anth.

The biggest raccoon I have ever seen is dead out front on the highway. Holy smokes, I thought it was a dog! Poor guy, he was too big to get out of the way.

I want to start by saying that my previous coal dealer is a good reliable guy and carries very good coal.
I got a delivery from him the year before last that I had been waiting for a while to get. It was summer and I was in no particular hurry but I didn't want to get forgotten so I called him again to request delivery. He must not have gotten his new shipments of coal for the season so what he delivered was a mix of pea, nut and stove size coal. All the wood in it told me that he has scraped the bottom of the bins to get me the three tons I had requested. He has the same stove I have and so he no doubt knew that my stove would burn all three sizes of coal and wood splinters just fine, which it does.
