hitzer 983 insert

I am still exploring the idea of a hitzer insert live in orange anyone know who carries the hitzer model 983 coal/wood insert, also any feedback on this unit wood be helpfull, also dealers where I can get info and pricing in connecticut. thanks. I have a see thru fireplace aprox. 34"wide 30"deep, 25 1/2 hight {opening} 12" tile flue

I live in Derby and it seems that Hitzer has just a few dealers here in Connecticut. The Hitzer is one of the very best stoves and you can't go wrong with that fireplace insert.

I have a 983 .. with a 2500 sq ft house ... we rarely use our oil (maybe when someone is sick and needs more heat in a bedroom). Your running a bit late but can probably still get one up and running before december.

Got mine at preston .. they did not have any on display when I bought. Want to take a look at mine? Your about 50 min from me...but on the way to preston trading post.

C2 - I have a 983 and love it. I just bought it a couple of months ago off Craiglist, but it has been my sole source of heat so far this year. My house is 2300 sq ft and so far the stove has been pretty much kept at an idle but still puts out tons of heat - like open the windostats heat! Mine is set up in the main floor living room at one end of the house and so far I'm really impressed. I'm actually looking forward to the really cold weather to see what this stove can do. As far as ease of use goes, I rate it as very easy. Once the fire's going just load it up and shut down the air to where you want it and you're good to go. Shake twice a day, dump the ashes and keep the firebox full - that's it. Last year I heated with a Surdiac free standing which was much more particular and required much more attention. This stove is much easier and is a beast when it comes to heat output. Oh, one final benefit - my wife likes the way it looks. Last year with the Surdiac - not so much. OK , I confess I am an OC resident and your local Hitzer stockist is off RT 17 Exit 119, Chimneysweepenergy at Pine Bush (they have a web site). They don't stock them you have to order them in. I'm not anti Hitzer in any way. Many, many postings tell me Hitzer is a a very good company.

If you order now with luck you will have it up and running by the end of winter, see the sign over the counter. There is nothing like good dealer service and if you need that to operate our stove, good luck to you there. If not, call the factory directly or use Craigslist and call upon these good people here to guide you. In the end, we coalites (is that the word) need to become independent and need to understand how to operate our stoves. If you need your a ss wiped it will be in January, - 10F and no one will hear you, least of all the Pine Bush crowd. Coal collage is a warm friendly place but you need to attend the classes and then you are mostly on your own, it's not NEPA out here.

I have a 503 --- coal insert with a hopper. You can burn wood in it but I rarely do, especially once coal is fired up.

The 983 does not have a hopper .. one reason why I chose the 503 over it.

But if you don't mind not having a hopper it should serve you well.

Got mine (ordered really) at Preston Trading Post in CT.

Coal stoves are designed for the airflow to go from the bottom up which is different than a wood stove. I never had a problem burning wood (mostly construction leftovers) but I have not run logs in it for any extended period of time so I cannot venture an opinion on how they would burn.

I would say, only burn coal, sell any wood that you would like to have burned.
