Could that be put in service as is or should it be cleaned up substantially? I assume you are looking at rust on the outside and I further assume this is normal?

The rust you see is most likely superficial. note that its where welds and joints are which is pretty common for any steel product. It of course should probably be inspected before purchase for deep structural rust.

With all the ebay junkies we have on here, it was destined for publication.

Greyhound as coalman said the outside rust is of no concern (eventually some maint is in order), the internals would need a complete cleaning and inspection. Chances are this boiler is ready to go!

My 57 year old maintenance-neglected AxemanAnderson 260M was amazingly clean inside. For me the outside surface rust on the EFM is immaterial. The stoker mechanisms are pretty bullet-proof, and parts are available, a whole stoker assembly sold on Ebay last week for $100, all for spare parts.

These units are HEAVY, but can be broken down into smaller slightly more manageable pieces.

Below are photos from an EFM rebuilder showing the individual pieces.

Looks like they ended it early . I hope someone got it at a price a lot lower than the auction would have got for them . Lousy ebay practices in my opinion . Shouldn't end early without having it listed as for sale elsewhere. Or buy it know . Dave

Flyer5, I was hoping that you had emailed the seller and got a deal on it. Sorry to hear it got away. It looked like a unit just about ready to go. Unlike my AA boiler that needed so much rebuilding.

One tip on ebay auctions, people don't follow the rules, if you are interested in something always email the owner and ask for a buy it now. I have learned this from not being able to purchase things that I just thought I had to have :lol:

Another nice thing about ebay is there will always be another one maybe even a better deal . I am in no hurry I am looking for next yrs season . I still have a lot of wood to burn . Also I am using my 3yr old + heating oil . I had 500gal figured I should use it up .I have to rearrange the tanks for my coal bin anyway.I believe I paid $1.20 for it so for right now oil is cheaper than coal

That would be almost painful to see go but as you said might as well use it up while figuring out what to do. :idea:

Thats what I figure .I filled the tanks just before the price jump . Soon as it gets cold enough probably in the next couple nights I will go back to wood . The oil would only go bad anyway,well maybe not bad but it does get cruddy when it sits .But I will be moving the tanks in the spring to make room for the coal also. I figure they are much easier to move empty . I have 5 1/2 cords of wood that will last till spring . Dave
