That's a great stove!

I bet once you fire that Hitzer up you won't miss that wood stove at all, in fact you will most likely wonder why you didn't go to coal years ago.

Hello Smoker858, I do love my Vermont Castings Vigilant, and I would love to have a coal kit for it. Did you have any luck with burning coal in your VC Vigilant? Why did you replace it? I am also in northern NJ. I am in Sparta. Do you still have the coal kit available?
Thanks
Thanks

Yes the entire stove is in my garage as of today. The coal kit is currently installed. If you check out the BTU rate of the VC it falls way short of what I need to heat a 2400 sq ft house with coal. Hence the Hitzer 50-93. I burned wood up until last year.
Wood is difficult to obtain and a lot of work. so after 30 years of burning wood 24/7 in the winter the decision was made to switch to coal. check your PM

Driving home in the snow from Torrington CT to Parsippany NJ took only 7 hours.
Left Torrington with a 540 pound load, 50-93 stove (with bags of NUT) and a 4 WD brand new Chevy pickup.
That 4 WD came in handy.
Oh yes there was some snow to contend with on the way home. The trip required 4 primo cigars.
All in all a good day

I have not had time to check as to the removable hopper design yet. However the stove has only been used 1 season by the former owners. So from what I have read on this forum I do believe it is removable.
Here is why it was sold: The stove was used 1 season near Boston, the owners moved to another house which has a prefab fireplace. Contractor(s0 wanted $2500.00 to upgrade the existing setup to handle a coal burner. So they opted for a Cadillac type pellet stove. Hence the Hitzer went up for sale. While picking up the Hitzer, since I had a heavy duty hand truck I put their pellet stove into place from the garage.
Tonight the Hitzer gets piped into the SS 8" prefab chimney with 6" stove pipe. I will use a 6 x 8 reducer just before the thimble. Will use a 6" barametric damper in that horizontal run, elbow down, drop 34" then elbow into the stove.
The Manometer - Mark II will be piped with 1/8" soft copper tube to the vertical a 6" above the "Hitzer" elbow.
Picture will follow ASAP.

I would also put in a MPD, I found with mine that if I use the MPD and have the baro capped off that the stove performs better. I can run the stove at 400* and the stack is only 150 and with the baro open stove at 400 the stack is 200 to 225. I have no idea why this is totally oposite of what everyone on here says but it is. I have been burning now for three weeks and have not used more than 25lbs in 24 hrs. On the warmer days it idles down to about 180* then I bump it up at night. Third season burning this stove.Smoker858 wrote:I have not had time to check as to the removable hopper design yet. However the stove has only been used 1 season by the former owners.
