I live between syracuse and rochester and coal here is $ 200 a ton .I'm new to this coal burning but have learned alot here
I was wondering if it might be worth a trip south to pennsylvania to pick up some coal maybe it would be better quality and maybe a little cheaper.
Where would the closest place to the new york, penn border be that sells good coal ???
Got the keystone hf -70 hand fired idling along and love it so far

Hi Tim, if the coal you have available is burning good for you, then I'd stay with it.
The closest really good coal is down off I-81 near Pottsville. Coal berner will be glad to give you some directions. But this it about a 4-5 hour drive each way for you. So unless you were able to buy several tons, the savings isn't there.
If you have access to a truck and or trailer and want to take a trip, that's another story. Then the fuel spent and time spent is for two purposes, not just chasing coal.
Most coal at the mine is around $140/ton, so add in your fuel costs and you are at the same price you are paying at home.
Now, if you have a big coal bin and can store 10 tons or more, then get a truck load brought in!!

I'm in Allegany county and it's the same thing for me, there is no savings driving 450 miles round trip to pick it up myself. The best deal is to have a full 25 ton load delivered, but even though there are big savings you still have to shell out $4000+ all at once.
Im in between Syr. and Roch. too Its too bad I don't have access to large enough trailer to make the trip really worth it. I still dream about it though but I just paid 3.15 for a gallon of gas today so those dreams are faiding fast. Luckilly though the recent gas jump hasnt hit the local coal yard yet. I pay 195 a ton in moravia n.y. Jim
