Good evening everyone. I lit the match on Thursday. It sure is nice to be burning coal again. Warm house and I'm not afraid to go check the propane tank quantity.
I stoped at a garage sale and found an old KitchenAid coffee grinder, when I looked for a similar one on Ebay, I found the I'd just about stolen the grinder. Cleaned it up and it works great. A good find.
I did a lot of 'getting ready for winter' chores this week, I'm almost ready, but still not looking forward to snow.
Have a great week !!

Nice truck you got there Freddy. Green tape to fix rust spot on green truck Rick 386 must have done that. The interior looks nice and the rubber looks good too. A few repairs are to be expected, after all you bought it for 30% off.
On a serious note, I wonder if the people know the scope of the problems. I saw a lot of power and tree cleanup trucks in my travels last week through Mass and Connecticut. I also saw a lot of tree damage. People just don’t understand how power gets to their house. The problem may be 20 miles away but if they don’t see a truck on their block they think the problem is not being addressed. The last prolonged power outage around here was over five years ago. It was a September hurricane. The next year the power company started doing major upgrades. Poles were replaced; some power lines were re-routed over open areas rather than through wooded areas, and major tree trimming was done to protect the lines. Ever since then we came through hurricanes and snow and ice storms with little trouble.
I finally got to clean the boiler yesterday after procrastinating. A dirty job for sure. I am surprised at how much less fly ash I get out of my stove pipe and chimney compared to my Mom’s. Our coal comes from the same place; the boilers are not the same. I have ½ to ¾ inch of fly ash in my horizontal runs and at my Mother’s it is almost 2 inches of fly ash.
I guess I’ll see what gets done today.
SMITTY they should pass a law requiring the power companies to restore power within 4 hours or else. That should fix it. How about passing a law that if a tree on your property damages the power lines you are responsible, yes let’s make the landowners responsible for damages their trees create. Hey, maybe pass a law mandating every home owner to buy a generator à la Romney/Obama-Care. Look, I’m so friggen smart I could be a politician, I just have to work on the fake smile and glad-handing buy a cheap suit and cheap cologne, who knows, maybe you will see me on Beacon Hill some day.SMITTY wrote:We finally got power back last night. Shutting the gen off at night saved quite a bit of fuel ... and thus, money. Worked out well. My free camp stove came in just in the nick of time. A week before the storm hit. Got it with my built up credit card points that I completely forgot about for 3 years or so. Had quite a pile of points!
Of course people around MA are freaking out. Reading all the commentary on local paper's websites, people want to string up the power companies in the public square! Now we have our lovely Beacon Hill morons coming to save the day with more rules & regulations for power companies. God, people are morons in this state ..... who do they think the power company will pass the costs on to????? DUHHH!!! Stupid idiots!! GRRR!!! No wonder America is slipping ............ alright where's that coffee ....

Totally missed breakfast yesterday! I was up early, too early! Finally found someone crazy enough to take a newbie out in the woods with a loaded shotgun!
Pheasant season opened recently and I got a couple opportunities but never did pull the trigger.
Maybe next time.
Off to have my Sunday morning coffee!

Back when I was a kid, I worked for Asplundt Tree Service when it was 1 truck out of a little garage in Huntington Valley & we used to get line clearing contracts from PPL--(I think that was who) now they are all over. I'd love one of those contracts today--I bet they get more money then we did back when,
Good deal on the Ranger, Freddy. Is it 4wd? If it is I'll fall on the floor from jealousy. I had an '85 Ranger for 15 years! Had the engine rebuilt at 165k. Finally sold that truck, regular cab longbed to a kid, who blew the A4ld trans immediately. It could have gone another 50k. Have another one now, a 93 5speed, nothing in it, not even a radio.
We just got power back last night at dusk. The linemen were from Wisconsin!
During Irene a lot of locals got Generac 5500w generators from the local hardware store. I hooked ours back up the day of the storm. $30/day in gasoline.
I got a customer's hooked up again and agreed to feed it all week. I was showing up at midnight every night to fill it. I had it backfed through a 100amp breaker, the guy's panel is packed and no other way. Old Crouse-Hinds panel. I cut the breaker one night and it blew, croaked. Backfed through another 50 amp breaker and left it alone for the duration. Local electrical supply house was very busy selling generator related items. First few days it was tough to get around with all the closed roads.
Generator Housewives: The one lady started cooking in their electric oven, blew a breaker.
I'm not talking to my landlady. She HAD to have her cleaning service in on Friday. That's after she made me fix the vacuum cleaner they ruin on a weekly basis. They came in, turned on all the lights, ran the water, the dishwasher, and blew the breaker on the generator and browned the place out. It wrecked the router over there too. She calls me yelling like it's my fault! I went over with guns blazing. No apologies from her. Too much!

3M brand headlight polishing kit is about the best one out there. it comes with everything cept the drill and rag
about 23 bucks retail. there are many cheaper kits that just don't work. there are several homeade concotions ive seen work pretty good but after all is said and done, the 3 m kit is the ticket....

I just got new headlights and parking light covers for the GMC. Cheap enough, they came with bulbs and all. Old ones were downright yellowed. Didn't seem to want to adjust properly though. It's too bad I'm slowly populating my American vehicles with cheap Chinese parts.

Heyyyyyyyyy, I resemble that remark.gaw wrote:Nice truck you got there Freddy. Green tape to fix rust spot on green truck Rick 386 must have done that...........
Actually that looks like the green school bus seat tape my brother used to sell. It's sticks almost as good as that NASCAR 200 mph duct tape. And it works well to attach body cladding when it comes loose from the clips or double sided OEM tape . Whatever the customer wants as long as it doesn't make me liable for the repairs or safety of the vehicle and/or occupants.
I agreee with using 2000 grit sandpaper and compound/polish to the lights. It does work and then sometimes you can apply a clear coat or a good wax to keep those lights clear.
Maintenance seems to be the key here this weekend. From maintaining hoppers to headlights, it all boils down to proper maintenance.
Did most of the honey doo chores this weekend but managed to get some "Smitty" time on Saturday afternoon in to the night. I enjoyed some homemade concoction that involved apples, cinnamon, and grain alcohol. Never tasted any alcohol but I knew it had to be dangerous so I kept my intake to a minimum. But damn, I really liked that stuff. Sitting outside by a wood fire passing a mason jar around. It don't get any better than that. The occasion was to celebrate the 50th birthday of my kid's father in law. Man when that family gets together, they know how to party !!!! Too bad I had to drive home or it may have gotten ugly. But then I couldn't have done so much today.........
Here's to hoping the northeast can get their power back to normal levels. Spoke with a colleague in N.H. who said that 70% of his town was still powerless on Saturday Afternoon. I feel for them. It appears that the only industry thriving right now is the generator manufacturers. More power to them and lets all hope that they are used properly.

You can't tape over rust! That's a major safety hazard! That will never pass inspection! People will be maimed or killed! Children blinded!
Oh, wait ..... I forgot you don't live in Massachusetts ....

The truck is two wheel drive. The only people that need 4wd are those that don't know where to stop!
The tape was for the photo only.... I just couldn't let you see the rust It's now sanded down & got a first layer of Bondo.
Gosh... I feel bad for those still without power. If it's any consolation, once it comes back a similar storm probably won't do much damage. All the weak trees are now trimmed!

Yeah, I spoke to Coalfire yesterday about the 3m kit. I'm going to try it. The stuff I used was like a no-name brand. I used it Saturday morning real quick then took the truck to her sister's that evening. I think it took some of the yellowing off just not all. It did improve the "brightness" of the lights, but not like they were when they were new. Like I said, I think I'm going to hit them with the 3m kit this weekend and see if that makes them better.Poconoeagle wrote:3M brand headlight polishing kit is about the best one out there. it comes with everything cept the drill and rag

Congratulations on your new truck and good luck with it. Nice looking truck, nice color, too. We have a Ranger. Standard cab/short bed.Freddy wrote:Good morning & welcome to the Forum! Seems a lot of new people are poking around. Just want to make sure they all get a clean cup and a good welcome. Don't be shy, come in, stay a while, tell us how you stay warm. There's buckwheat pancakes cooking and I think I smell sausage too. Fresh fruit in the basket. Grapes, bananas, round red things....join us!
I sit here typing, waiting for the phone to ring, telling us our LL Hearth is ready to pick up. Our stove dealer set aside all the pipe sections we need, along with a baro. I'm just scouting around for a manometer. We are replacing a Wellington. It's going in front of the fireplace, vented straight back & up the chimney. (cape) A couple tons of Centralia in the coal bin, a bag of Cowboy Coal... I'm probably forgetting something.
Staying warm with an Edenpure (IR) in the meantime, ...and a cup of your coffee.
