Ok guys here's the story!

About a month ago I called the police on my next-door neighbor after hearing him screaming and possibly hitting his wife. They talked to him and I kind of forgot about the whole thing till a few nights ago.

Thursday night, just about at 1:00am, the dog in my avatar woke me up with barking. So I went to the front door and looked out and saw someone pacing back and forth near my mailbox. For about twenty seconds I thought it was my other neighbor across the street walking his little dog. But, I needed to investigate why the person was not moving so I let the dog out into the backyard where he can see the front door and I walked outside, baseball bat in hand. After a few seconds I realized it was the neighbor guy that I had called the police on. I tried making small talk but soon realized that he was angry with me and was acting strangely. But, after a minute or so he walked away and I went inside and called the police.

Well, the next night at about the exact same time my dog started barking again. I looked out the window long enough to see this guy with his car parked in front of my house with his car door open. He was pacing back and forth and I called 911 this time. My neighbor was gone after a minute and the police eventually came, and I guess they called and spoke with him by phone this time.

Unfortunately, I exacerbated my problem when I said the following to the police officer and I quote "if he comes back again I will shoot him!".

That was a bad choice of words on my part. The whole demeanor of the situation was changed and "I" became the bad guy!

Of course, to add insult to my own injury......I don't even have a gun!

Long story short, but he never came back last night. I set the alarm and waited from 12:45 till 2:00am but he never returned. I did see the police suv drive up the road at 1:00am.

So, what should I do?

I am searching the internet for a game camera to take pictures without anyone knowing because he might have been doing this for weeks and I never knew?

To start, get some motion activated Insteon or X10 spots to monitor your gate. This style motion light will send a signal through your house either through the normal wiring system and/or radio frequency (RF). Get one or two plug-in modules that will plug into your wall receptacles and a table lamp or such will plug into that unit. When the motion lights are activated, the lamp(s) will come on. You can also get a door chime unit that will chime at the same time. The intruder will be bathed in light, your room(s) of choice will illuminate and you'll know they've been activated. No surprises. I've had this set up for years. Works well all the time ... when there's power ;)

1st.... buy a damn gun and get efficient with it, :!: To protect your family and yourself. Motion lights are cheap and a great preventative. I have driveway alarm, wireless cameras and am still concerned. Even with the K9 SUV with enough reflective sticker to be a Las Vegas night club.

NY has stalking laws. Basically any repeated act for no apparent reason. He keeps acting that way, ask for a police report every time. Cop will get tired of writing it out and handle it.
Your comment is a common one, don't sweat it.

In many instances just the sight of a gun is enough to thwart any intruder's plans and should be considered. It's quite obvious this guy has problems, could be as simple as anger issues or he could really be "mental". Anyone pacing around outside your house in the middle of the night should be taken seriously.

Definitely install motion activated floodlights and cameras as well.

Are there little ones in the house? Protecting them is the first priority.

The worst I have here is new neighbors who are "snooty" and don't even feel the need to wave hello.

Until you get your motion lights hooked up, keep your dawg out front. Our dog just loves to sit on the front porch and wait for slow-moving cars, or bicyclists, or joggers. He doesn't chase them, he just lets out the fiercest barking you ever heard. Would scrare the bejeebers out of you. Little do people know, if they walked up to him, he would just lick them like a puppy does...

release the hounds !!! have him arrested for being a peeping tom . make sure everything is locked up tighter than a bulls ass at fly time . get a gun anyway , but never use it unless you can 100% ID an intruder in your house . guns are not toys . don't shoot til you are 100% sure of the target . family members and friends have been shoot in situations like this . let the dog loose on him if he makes it threw the dog then shoot . my brother had his house broken into a couple of weeks ago at 3:00 PM on a sunday . in the broad daylight . turned out to be a crackhead . they don't care what time it is they need money for there crack and they will do what they need to to get it . see if you can get the guys records . buy a shotgun with buck shot . can't miss !

Prices on surveillance systems have come way down, as the technology has gone up. You can get a decent 4 camera system for short money these days. No more rewinding tape - they're all DVR now with hard drives. Get one in the H.264 format - last I checked that was the best there was ... although that changes by the minute these days so maybe there's something better already. Most of the stuff is made in china, but at least you can keep an eye on, and have a record of any events. You can even remotely view the cams over the net with a cell phone/ Iphone/ laptop - what have you. Most have a motion detection feature that will only record when motion is detected (saving disc space, and your reviewing time), and also beep loudly, warning you that something is outside.

They're not perfect however. You'll get false alarms, etc .. unless you spend thousands on the ones like the gov't uses, but at least you'll have an edge over any criminal. By the time he gets in, you'll be well prepared.

Also keep in mind - ESPECIALLY if you live in a liberal-controlled state - that the cams can also backfire on you, & be used against you if a firearm is used.

I called the police and told I was going to shoot someone if he came back on my property a few years back, after he threatened to cut my wife's throat. They told me I need to protect my family any way I deemed necessary. They did respond to my home and took a report. They went and talked to this guy and he never came back. I saw him a few months ago he did apologize for what he did that day. He also knew I meant what I said when I told him what would happen if he came back on my property. You do what you need to do to protect yourself and your family.

George,

It is so refreshing to hear someone such as yourself say this. Most law enforcement personnel tell the average homeowner to just lock the doors and call the cops if there is any further problems. When we all know that it is up to the individual to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Isn't there a saying like "Seconds count when the police are only minutes away."

One of these days I'll apply for my LTCF here in PA. But my county requires a few extra hoops to jump through to get it. And then there is the time to actually go down to the county courthouse and get photo'd and actually get the license. For now I'll just keep it handy in the house and business.

We actually set up our own shooting range at the house. We can do pistols and rifles up to 150 yards. My son in law put metal plates in the ground showing yardage markers. Never hurts to practice. In fact he just got $ 42.00 from the scrap brass. Yeah the jar was pretty full !!!!!!

Sorry for your problems. I have motion floods on the front of the garage here, didn't stop some dirtbag from going in my truck and stealing my toolboxes at midnight. I didn't put two and two together until I flagged down a cop coming down our lane. I thought I had left my toolboxes someplace. The burglar had hit another car up the street. The cops had my toolboxes, they had caught the theif.
This street has 7 houses, the idiot across the street decided to rescue greyhounds, they bark all day long. The lady up the street got divorced, she's a Spanish teacher. She sold her house to ghetto types that own a liquor store in Newark. When the house across the street, next door to us, came up for sale, their relatives bought it. One of them started pulling screeching hole shots in a 71 240Z at the end of our street when they first moved here. I stopped him and had words with him. Three years later they have so many cars going up and down the street I'm sure they're dealing drugs too. They started renovating their houses with no permits, brought in dozens of tandem loads of fill, cut down 200 year old poplars, run chainsaws all day long, log splitters, etc. Now they are raising CHICKENS in their garage and have a ROOSTER! Their next door neighbor is a divorced lady with two teens that has lived in her house all her life. She has been totally frustrated by being woken up by a rooster every day before dawn. She is afraid to call the cops because these people are ghetto thugs and she feels threatened. At least they haven't stalked us, but they did run me off the road right in front of the place during the storm. Rotten neighbors SUCK.
