I agree that fresh, split green out DOES smell foul..even if you have if stacked and out of mind, sure enough a time comes when you are near it, smell something a bit nasty, and think: "whats that lousy smell??...Oh yeah!...the wood pile'..
Probably left in log length form you wouldn't have the stencth!
It might be nice to drive by a bunch of freshly cut trees and get a nice whiff of Mother Nature..but its different when its sitting there in a heap near your living space....
Freddy..do u still have Elms left up there?? That old Elm disease wiped most of them out down her in Southern NE like 30-40 years ago...the streets used to lined with them...then they all went the way of the dinosoar..
Now I see that they have come up with a 'hybrid' Elm that is resistant to that disease..
Hey! Plant a few..wait about 70 years and cut some down..and let me know how the new improved ones smell..ok?
