All the free Oak....

......in central CT post snow storm makes me want to go back to wood burning but I stopped myself....................

Though it did'nt stop me from scavenging a free cord of 'oak in reserve !

A tremendous # of old oaks came down in central CT from the snow storm, you can drive thru some old neighborhoods and smell OAK, it's wonderful!!

That's interesting, because green oak in Pennsylvania smell like dog *censored*.

Just drove by a sign in Dumont, NJ. $250 a cord. . No thanks.

Although I kind of miss that huge stack of split firewood.

Probably the sane reason I switched to coal. It's easier, warmer, burns a lot longer.

Back in my younger days I burned wood. The best I ever had was some free oak. I cut & split it, dried it under cover for two years.... it was like logs of coal! The only dog-poop wood I remember was elm. Yuccck, that's the worst stuff ever!

I agree that fresh, split green out DOES smell foul..even if you have if stacked and out of mind, sure enough a time comes when you are near it, smell something a bit nasty, and think: "whats that lousy smell??...Oh yeah!...the wood pile'..

Probably left in log length form you wouldn't have the stencth!

It might be nice to drive by a bunch of freshly cut trees and get a nice whiff of Mother Nature..but its different when its sitting there in a heap near your living space....

Freddy..do u still have Elms left up there?? That old Elm disease wiped most of them out down her in Southern NE like 30-40 years ago...the streets used to lined with them...then they all went the way of the dinosoar..

Now I see that they have come up with a 'hybrid' Elm that is resistant to that disease..

Hey! Plant a few..wait about 70 years and cut some down..and let me know how the new improved ones smell..ok?

There are still some. The Dutch Elm disease did wipe out most of them, but it missed some & we still have some biggies here & there.

if u want good slow burning wood try locust but DONT burn it green big time creosote have to split it (easy) let it set till NEXT winter.
