Any Guess as to the Age of This Harman SF-250?
Hey guys,
I saw this on craigslist yesterday. The ad says it was purchased new in 2009. But looking at the door latches. It does not appear to match the newer models. I noticed a picture someone posted with their heat exchanger installed. And that was pre-2009 and it had the new type latches.
Anybody have any idea of how old this could be. I suspect it is just a re-conditioned unit.

Older than 2009 I would say. Harman has used the newer style door latches on their stoves for many years. Even so they are built like a tank. As long as there is no evidence of overheating like warped grates or baffle, I wouldn't have any concern about the age.

I don't recall those looking like that in '08 when I was ready to buy one myself. I don't recall a multi-fuel label on one either.
Price ain't bad - especially with delivery. Looks to be as good as new, although I'm not a huge fan of the latch system on that one.

We just bought a new SF-250 a couple months back. We were told by the dealer that it'd been in his warehouse for a few years. So, yours would appear to be older than 3 years. I think the SF was first designed in 1978/79 as a college project by Mr. Harman himself who was a mechanical engineer, I believe. Either way, they're like a tank; if the grates work well I'd think you'd be fine - maybe replace the door and window gaskets if you're concerned? Why not drop Harman Stove an email with the pic?

The dual fuel label would have been ditched when the EPA decided it didn't meet new wood burner emission standards. What year that was probably could be searched.

My sf250 was bought in 2004 and has the new latch system on it. Mine had the duel fuel sticker, but when I went back the next year sticker was coal only.

If you want a mean hand-fired stove or furnace, look at a Hitzer 82. You can get them as a radiant stove or with a jacket & blower. Half the cost of a Harman, better customer service, and a set of grates that can crunch up nearly anything.SMITTY wrote:Where was this guy 3 years ago? Too late for me now. What's done is done.
I do have a coal stoker boiler I acquired recently though. Still have to burn through 3 seasons of nut first, then see how the finances are for plumbing supplies. As of right now I can't afford to even re-roof my buildings here so it's going to be quite a ways down the road before it's throwing heat. Then there's the concrete for the barn floor ....
