The Cold Weather Is Here!

Although the temperature can moderate, looks like the first cold weather of the season is here (at least in NW New Jersey). It's currently 29 and forecast to go to 24 tonight.

The Harman is rolling along. I even had to light the wood burner to keep the other end of the house warm.

This drafty old house gets cold fast when the temps dip below freezing.

Hey JC,

I see you have a pic of your stove on now.

I can't get the house as warm as yours in this cold weather unless I get the Harman and the Fisher really crankin'. I'm satisfied just being comfortable,without roasting when it's cold out!
Time to go to the cellar and refill the scuttle.

Yea Wood' ncoal but I am only heating 1500sq. ft downstairs and 1621.36 upstairs 1949 coal ash cinder block Ranch house with 1988 double pane windows that leak Two of them the gas is out seal broke maybe next year I will replace them

I'm heating about 1900 sq. ft., partially insulated, very old construction. Mostly old wooden double sash windows from the 1930's that are very drafty. I still have a few storm windows to close. Out of the 23 windows I have 6 Anderson double panes (3 in the kitchen addition and 3 replaced in the house so far). Just trying to keep the heat in and the drafts out!

Well you got me beat on windows I have 8 single pane steel frame windows some have single pane storm windows on them some have plastick covering them in the basement and 10 double pane on first floor

Guys--

I'm heating 3600 sq ft with what amounts to a Harman the size of a Harman Mark I. Being my firebox is reduced 50%. But I cannot get the furthest room from the stove above 67F on a 20F +/-5F night. Maybe using 40lbs a day right now.

It's 28* here & I have my Harman cranking this morning. I'm heating 2200sf (raised ranch with stove in basement family room) Although I have been heating with coal for many years, this is my first time using a (jury-rigged) blower fan & wow, what a difference! I'm trying to avoid using my gas fed, forced warm air furnace at all. (I usually let it come on early in the am to jumpstart the heat) I can hardly wait until my wife gets up & sees the fans I have running downstairs to "motivate" the warm air to go up the stairs a bit faster.
I'm trying to conserve coal so I have really been letting the Harman idle for the most part....using 20lbs (1/2 a bag)of nut a day.

Well, I went to Conn. overnight on business, I had the Harman filled when I left yesterday, my wife said she still had it going last night, but as I drove up the road late this afternoon I saw smoke from the other chimney, the evil woodstove!!!!

I guess she let the fire burn too low, she doesn't have the patience that I have with the stove. At least the oil furnace wasn't on, plus it was unusually warm today.

Of course the coal is burning now.

We've been burning wood for about 2 weeks on and off as it got colder but yesterday was the first time I switched over to coal this year. It's nice to have the flexibility to burn either fuel.

I will have to shut it down at some point in the near future to replace the grates, which are on order. The ones in there now are kind of warped which makes it hard to shake down. $70 each - ouch! Does anyone have a good source for Ashley stove parts?

It's interesting watching the weather change as I was digesting the Turkey, it was downright warm for November, around 65 here today, I idled the stove down, with the new coal I was able to keep burning with the draft at 3/4 turn. Now it's 40 out and dropping. I'm bringing the stove back up now.

It's all about the quality of the coal!!! I'll say it again...no never mind, you already know!

Probably a lot less fighting with the stove, It was out again this AM, once the fire got too low, it never really recovered.
You know the saying on every pizza box-"You've tried all the rest, now try the best".

Its 7:15 PM, its 25 outside, 76 in basement and 72 in living room, gotta love coal!
