I doubt the water had anything to do with it, I am blaming this on a manufacturing defect.

My well water tested at 22 grains per gallon of hardness, pH is 7.0, zero iron, and a few PPM of sulfur. Could be better...could be a lot worse. I have a nice water softener and an activated charcoal system that makes the tap water a pleasure to drink.

Want me to send you the old tank for a JB Weld & duct tape repair?

That sucks! I never seen that happen either. Do you think they will replace it after 2 years?

Seems like a defect. The water is a little on the basic side, but not that much.

I am pretty sure boiler water is supposed to be basic...somewhere I have a book that mentions treatment of boiler water.

If I ever need to redue my exp. tanks ,I will use a ball valve above them, I one would fail, the other could get by till repaired, their wouldn't be a need to drain the system, and it would be possable to check the preload air once in a while.

Since I know nothing about this I did some poking around on the 'net and you are correct:

Alkaline pH causes an oxide film to form on the boiler tube surfaces that protects the base metal from further corrosion and allows breaks in the film to heal efficiently.

They are both on the boiler. One wasn't enough to keep the pressure stable. The oil boiler originally had a steel compression tank up in the ceiling joists, but that was replaced at some point. Whoever did the work installed an Extrol in its place. When I bought the house that Extrol was water-logged, and I read that the tanks shouldn't be on their side. Without a lot of repiping, it was easiest to mount them on the floor. Each tank sits on a 6" PVC coupler to keep it off the floor. Now that I am a few years wiser...I should have just bought a commercial floor mounted Extrol tank.

Mr Murphy says this will occur on an unnamed holiday week, usually late at night, in the privacy of some corner of the basement....blah, blah, blah. Once again, the need to have a spare of a few key parts comes up. Must have crushed up a few old Subarus or Kias to make that bunch of tanks. Bummer...but a couple days to make it better.....and short money for the repair.
