Sounds like something is out of balance or worn, like a motor bearing.

It's the motor, I had one that sounded the same way before it died. Make sure the fan isn't bent and throwing the motor out of balance.

I'll look into replacing it. Its for my folks boiler. Any place near Doylestown PA to buy one while I am here?

Here is the motor information:

Marathon Electric, KPL48S17T286D FR-48-N2 1725rpm .12HP

Thanks,

Grainger Item # 4MA10
Price (ea.) $79.80
Brand A.O. SMITH
Mfr. Model # EL2004V1

w/ sleeve bearing :(

What you need is called a "Oil burner motor" 48N is the mounting configuration.

.12 hp...doesn't sound correct...however, 1/8 (hp) is ~12% of 1.00

Be sure to use the dust cover that comes with the motor.

If oiling the motor doesn't help, and if you haven't done so yet, I'd suggest removing the 3 bolts that secure the fan cover plate to the fan housing and pull the whole assembly out. You then should be able to do a quick diagnosis, or at least rule out things like fouled or bent fan blades, loose fan connection to shaft, inadequate fan clearance, etc. There's no harm in having a spare motor, but it's also good to make sure you know what you're dealing with. There's also no harm in checking the transmission oil level, and making sure it's synthetic or reasonably fresh regular oil. I was surprised by how much an oil change affected the racket from my (still-noisy) 85R.

Thanks everyone! I'll take it apart and see what I find, but I'll order the motor from Grainger too.

I thought the motor for my circulator was shot, because of the astounding noise it made. It's amazing how much of a difference neglect makes, and how much of a difference it makes to oil it. That was about a year or two ago, and no problem since. I used this:

It's a shame to neglect it, because once you know what to do, it's way easy. Both motors have 2 cups or plugs, and the coupler has one.

Your circulator is the B & G which can be oiled. Many of the newer units are using the Taco series which are not oiled. Hydronic 5 is a product which turns your boiler water to a lubricant for the circulator bearing.
