ordered new keystoker koker

PostBy: moparcolt On: Wed Nov 14, 2007 8:04 pm

I ordered a new koker today, I just refuse to heat my house with OIL any more!!! I have been using a big Rite Way wood/coal unit for the past several years but It is finally dead!not worth rebuilding and parts no longer available. Besides, it was not a very efficient unit, it was too big for my house, although it kept it pleanty warm it sucked up fuel like a 70 cadilac fleetwood!
I am looking foreward to getting the new stove, I am only a little concerned about getting the heat evenly distributed. I live in a ranch with one end of the basement exposed and garage doors on that end of the house. The stove will be in the garage part of the basement. I am taking out the oil furnace and putting the coal stove where it is now. I am going to hook the Koker into the duct work where the oil stove is hooked up now. I know it wil radiate pleanty in the garage but I hope it blows enough heat through the ducts to keep the house nice and toasty.
Is the stock blower (1500cfm) big enough to do the job?

House is 1400 square feet approx 24 X 56 feet

I would think so, many of us are just using the stock blowers (265-400cfm) on the stoves to heat our houses. It all depends on how far you have to push the hot air, you may have to insulate the duct work or add a duct blower to pull the air to the remote locations or turn down the closer outlets a bit to force more air to the other ones. You will have just experiment a bit.

Hey Moparcolt:

I'm heating a 4000 sq ft, 2 story colonial with no problems with my Koker. I love this thing! I believe the convection blower is rated at 1450 CFM. You'll have no problems pushing air through your existing duct work.

I "plumbed" in a fresh air supply for my combusion fan last weekend---I'm looking forward to improvements with this new supply of oxygen rich air for the combustion fan.

FYI: You'll probably need to throttle the stoker back with the square footage you're heating. I don't believe you'll need the Koker's full 160K BTU output!

Good choice! Hope you have a good supply of rice coal. I'm burning Blaschak bagged rice. I hope to score a ton of deep mined rice while I'm in NEPA for Thanksgiving.

BTW: Did you get the "thermostat" model? I added a digital programmable thermostat to my unit; and, this is now one slick set up for "sticking it to the man." The "energy" man of course... My 500 gallon propane tank is currently full. I plan to keep it that way all winter...

Enjoy Your Koker! It's a great machine!! :)

Yes, I took some pictures of my fresh air set-up this morning (Saturday 11/17). I'll get the pics up tomorrow (Sunday 11/18).

When do you take delivery of that Koker?? You must be psyched!! :D

Here are pictures of my fresh air set-up for the Koker. I simply used some left over 4" dust collection parts/material from my shop. The only thing I purchased new was a 4" dryer exhaust assembly from Lowe's.

I have a Key Stoker Koker 160 and are heating a 2,650 sf ranch the Koker is installed into my duct work and is on one end of my basement it heats the entire house with no problem it heats up the floors very nice making the house much warmer you may need to tweak a few things to get the heat where you want it but I don't think you will be disappointed.. I love mine..

Here are some pics of my cold air return and hot air supply duct work. I'm fairly happy with my results; although, I'd do things slightly different given the opportunity to do things over again... I'm not getting the air flow I'd like on my second floor. The Koker definitely has the heating capacity with 160K BTUs. And the Koker's hot air convection fan has enough flow (1529 CFM) for most applications. My two heating zones (1st floor and 2nd floor) simply requires more volume. I haven't decided how to completely solve the problem yet; but, I'm working on it...

Where does the cold air return feed from. You might try blocking off the cold air return from the first floor and return only from the second floor. This might coax that cooler second floor air to return better and the warm first floor will heat it by natural convection.

Just an idea, not sure if it is feasible. :)

It looks like you have two or three times the volume of pipes and ducts going out of the furnace than you have returning to the inlet of the fan. This in effect throttles the distribution fan. If you add an additional cold air return from the cooler upstairs I believe you will increase the output air volume.
A floor level or a room is like a sealed box, if you pump air into it you will only get so much into the box untill you let some out. Provide a good cold air return to the distribution fan from the upstairs area that you want to increase the hot air flow into. You will see an increase in hot air flow.

Unfortunately, the Koker furnace design doesn't allow mechanical clearance for building an air tight cold air return supply duct around the convection blower assembly---as found in most furnace designs. There's simply mechanical interference with the stoker mechanism. Now if Keystoker had only added about 2" of addtional height to the design---there would be sufficient clearance... That's why I was forced to go with the smaller (8" diameter) cold air return duct feeding the convection blower assembly from the side...

I'm currently keeping all second floor room doors open; and, I'm keeping the basement door open too. This is creating much better cold air return air flow.

I've tried manually turning on my "primary" propane furnace convection fan to assist with pushing hot air through the ducts; but, the propane system "steals" ALL the cold air return flow and I end up with NO heat flowing through the duct work at all!

I'm convinced I should've gone with a Keystoker A-150 which has provision for an air tight cold air return supply to the convection blower---slightly more money; but, probably worth it.

I'm not convinced this is a huge problem yet. When the temperature drops below zero and the north wind starts blowing like crazy in January/February, that's when I'll know how real the problem is...

Thanks!

DW

Dewey, did you find any draft or pressure measurement changes in your stove after you installed your fresh air intake line to the combustion blower? Thanks!
