Is this not standard?

Only as an option or upgrade?

I will put that on my list.

Tell them we all want one.

In general I would:

1. Use an indirect hot water heater, rather than the in boiler coil.

2. Make sure you have a good natural draft chimney. Measure with a Dwyer gauge to make sure and install the gauge permanently.

3. Pipe it as a primary secondary system.

4. Make sure you buy a belt drive combustion blower system.

5. Think about how you can improve your coal and ash handling in the future. Location of the boiler will have a great impact on what you can do.

6. Understand your building and fire code requirements. And how you will meet them if you must do so.

7. Get it writing from AHS what you are buying. Ask for specific information. Location of tappings and sizes, control types and model numbers, etc.

Now, relax AND DO AS YANCHE SUGGESTS! Don't waste any time asking anyone else, the master has spoken, AND he has the final word. We all concur!!!! understand the concept?
if you post 300 or 400 times we will All KNOW YOU JUST DON'T GET IT!

What sort of heating system is currently in the home? Cast iron radiators? Hot water? If it is an old gravity system the near-boiler piping is especially important.

The bottom pic shows the only issue that needs to be fixed with a new system install.

Also will need new expansion tank and possibly higher eff circ motors

That looks like a gravity system that was converted to forced circulation. Hopefully your installer is familiar with the special needs of a system like this. The large amount of mass makes the near-boiler piping very important so you can protect the boiler from excessively low temperatures.

I could be wrong but Im counting on Rob to correct me, it seems like awfully small pipes for 4000 sq ft. How many radiators and how many feet of baseboard do you have in your system? could it not be enough? I have 6 radiators and almost 60 feet of baseboard and im heating 2000 sq. feet, no insulations huge drafty windows just like you have

We have 12 stand ups, average of 2-3 ft long and about 100ft of baseboard.

Two zones...
one for the original standups and one for all the bb

Without standing in the basement it is tough to know what the whole story is. One thing is for certain...12 free standing radiators of that size and 100' of cast iron baseboard is serious business. As Yanche suggested, I would pipe the boiler & zones in a primary/secondary arrangement. It doesn't matter if it is an AHS, EFM, Keystoker, whatever...a high-mass system like this will bring the boiler to its knees if it isn't setup properly.

hmm, the estimator only glanced at the system for a few minutes.
Never mentioned about any way that it was currently set up.

He is taking a week to give me a price?

Not to swing your choice either way, ahs or axeman, you did post of adding an auger, that is the one feature standard with the axeman that I do like. When you consider the location of the boiler/coal bin it's an important decision. An auger will not move all the coal unless you have a funnel bottom on the bin, that would require more head room or a diminished size of the bin. When my bin is low, I need to push/rake coal towards the auger, or keep it full :D Still beats shoveling.
