John, it's not about the coal Or the stove, it's about the operator becoming knowledgeable enough to not make a mess in the house.

sorry its a 30-95 stove ... and Ic freetown fred you have a hitzer stove ... do you like yours ? I like the idea with no electric needed to run it besides the blower ... at least we could have heat if we loose power for a bit ... beats the heck out of this junk propane fireplace ...

love it wouldn't trade it for the world or what's left of it. ;) Biggest reason I got it was due to constant power outages here on the hill. John, how much space are you heating?

Burned the stove for 5 years. You have to shake it down daily. There is dust involved in that process. If you want less dust I would go with a stoker stove. That being said it kept my home warm, but I put up with dust. Can you mitigate the dust? Yes, of course, but I believe between the two you will eaisly get less with a stoker.

John, I think Fred said it best, learn how not to make a mess.I went from hand fed (nut & pea coal)to a stoker(rice coal)& I see no difference in dirt Or dust

that was my next question how often you have to shake and fill it ... know its got a 30pound hopper on it ... my house is very well insulated ... and someone said that you can burn wood in these also ? not sure on that

John, I do not burn wood in my Hitzer--it's a coal stove, it was designed specifically for that purpose.I do have a wood stove (beast) in the back part of the house, but do not use it very often. I think all the girly guys have become stoker salesmen. (except Hot Rocks) The 30-95 will work well with your house size & how it was built. I shake down & top off every 12 hrs--I'm heating 2400 sq of old farmhouse. My process--unlatch ash door--keep it closed--do 6 or so quick short chops ( not a full throw) I wait a minute or so & open ash door to make sure I've got some red embers in the ash pan & close & latch the ash door. I then slowly open the hopper door & top off & slowly close the hopper door This whole process may take 5 minutes tops. I only empty my ash pan--before my next shake down process. How are you emptying your ash pan? I just carry mine carefully out the stove room door & empty it. As far as your shake & top times--most people with our stoves do it every 12 hrs just to be consistent. If you find you can do it differently, have at it--it is your house & your stove & only you you know what she's doing & what her needs are. Later my friend

i only asked about the wood if I had too in an emergency ... what kinda of temps are you running on the exhaust pipe .. ? oh im sure I would be happy ... the stove would sit in my den and my attached garage is the next rooom about 10ft away plan on carrying out ashes and dumping them in a metal can out in the garage so the dust is out there ..

As far as my temps--remember, I'm an old farmer--I don't want to put my hand on the stove body--below my MPD I can keep it on the pipe for a second or two--above the MPD, it's a little cooler. I hope my technical description is kinda what you were looking for. toothy It sounds like that garage door was put there for this. ;) Later John PS my neighbor up the road has a keystoker & I know for a fact he would swap stoves with me in a heart beat. Silly guy----your hopper is removable--if that emergency ever came to bear--take it out--no over firing problems.
