Meaning particularly as your primary heat source. And do you use anthracite or bituminous (or sub-bit, lignite, peat, ...)?

I'm a rookie in my first winter season heating with anthracite.

been around coal for a long time, i've been heating with it as a primary heat source for about 14 years. ten with various hand-fired stoves, 4 with stoker. burning bituminous stoker from western PA, previously burning bituminous nut from western PA (with many other bit coals from time to time and illinios/missouri bituminous when I lived in north central missouri) the only time i burn anything else is when i'm away.

Built the house [had it built], designed it for coal heat. Moved in spring '92. Seperate boiler room and coal bin room under the attached garage. Installed a 50s, maybe 60s? 5 section bit boiler in summer/fall of '92. We hand fired for several years, then installed an old Iron Fireman [originally put into service Sep '42!]. I have an air/air heat pump, and although it's probably pretty efficient when it's 60 out, I choose to run the boiler early and late in the season [apx Oct 1, through June 1]. So, I guess that you could say that coal is my primary heat source.

This is my 2nd year using a Keystoker Kaa-2 boiler. My first experience with anth. The old bit boiler served me well, but I am glad that I made the switch. Much less work, and much cleaner.

So, 19th season in this house. Burned local bit coal in several other locations prior. Rented a house with coal fired hot air furnace in my early 20s.

Five years, all with anthracite.

Year one: Heatrola hand-fed.
Year two: Hitzer hand-fed
Year three (different house): Itasca hand-fed boiler
Year four: Itasca until December, installed an EFM in January
Year five (now): EFM, and I don't expect that to change as long as I live here.

9th year with rice coal. Do I get to count the the first 15 years of my life with nut in a hand fired ocatapus? Nah, I guess not although I did tend it from the age of about 12 until it got replaced 3 years later.

lsayre: R U some sort of Govt plant???????? You have more free than anyone I know. Is all this info some sort of trick to flush out the wacko's?

1972 was first hand fed, then AA 260's and a 130 AA since Oct. 1977. Yes, all of these units are STILL online....even the 'fool' who feeds them. Two puffbacks.....one Oct 13th 1977, second March 19, 1978. Think I figured that one out?

Yes, 'a few' with the AHS 130's and the 260's! Not earth-shaking, just gets your attention. You need to increase your workload....toooooooooooooo much free time, toooooooooooooooooooooo many questions.

If the 'Black Surburbans' are in your driveway, they are probably there to 'zip you into a tight white suit for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooog ride to 'Peace and Quiet-ville'. HINT HINT HINT HINT HINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :mad2: :mad3: :woot: :bang:
