problem with crowning or hard pack???

PostBy: Tnguy On: Mon Jan 30, 2012 1:15 am

heck i dont know what to call it but im having a hard time with this last load of Bit i got, its about golf ball to baseball size and when i fill the stove up full it will burn and freeze into a hard dome and will burn out the coal under it but i have to go out and "beat it loose" about every 6-8 hours or i loose heat :( i was burning softball to basketball sized peaces all winter without much problem at all, fill it up and it will run 24 hours before refill, any idea why this stuff wants to freeze up? nothing but the coal has changed

PS: its a hotblast 1550 furnace that is outside in its own shed pumping hot air inside

thanks

We call that 'bridging' the coal melts, and grows or swells, sticks together, and the fire burns out under the bridge.
What you are doing is the only thing you can do, use a bar or poker to break up the bridge,

Some Bituminous coal swells more than other coals. It depends on the vein of coal it was mined from.

The larger pieces don't seem to swell and stick together as much as the smaller stuff. Try to buy the large lump coal or find
a different coal, from a differnt mine or vein.

as greg mentiones it's the coal, not the appliance. This is what happens when you get a high "coke button" (FSI) coal. coke button is 0-9, for home heating lower is better. buy your coal from someone else.

thanks guys, i figured it had to be the coal because ive been going all winter without any trouble. Im stuck with this coal place because its the only place around here to get coal at ALL. only other option is to drive 4+ hours one way to get it, and that gets too expensive.....

thanks

Ask then to get more coal from the previous source that did not swell and bridge in your furnace.

or try just the larger sized coal.
