File Size Limits

File Size Limits

PostBy: Richard S. On: Sat Nov 17, 2007 11:38 pm

With the new server I now have a lot more resources so I've made the following changes for attachment limits:

1. Standard Image file size limits have been increased from 300KB to 1MB including the following extensions:
    gif
    jpeg
    jpg
    png

2. I've added a special image group for uncompressed images with a limit of 50MB, if you don't know what these are used for don't use them.
    tga
    tif

3. The following media extensions are allowed with file limit of 50MB:
    mp3
    wma
    wmv
    swf
    rm

4. The following archive extensions are allowed with a file limit of 50MB:
    ace
    gtar
    gz
    rar
    tar
    zip

5. The following document extensions are allowed with a file limit of 50MB:
    pdf
    txt
    xls

6. You can use attachments in PM's however you have a max limit of 100MB total space for attachments in PM's. I'm not exactly sure how this works yet but I'm assuming if someone sends you 2 50MB files your limit will be reached. This will not affect the sender. Delete old attachments or the PM itself when you no longer need it.

------------------------------------

Whether you can upload a 50MB file or any larger file size for that matter depends on you connection speed. The page will time out after approximately 4 minutes. If the upload has not completed before then it will fail.

Please do not use abuse the file limits, use the appropriate file type for what you are uploading. I'll be adding a more detailed explanation to the file types and expected times according to connection speeds shortly. If you have any questions or any suggestions on file types post it here.

I just read on here somewhere (now I can't find it) that you do not like people to hotlink photos from a source like photobucket. I couldn't find a topic or post from you about this, so I'm asking here. Why is this?

Thanks

I'd prefer you uploaded them here because they usually end up disappearing down the line somewhere or get changed to something else and can possibly screw up thread but you can use those services if you want. Any images or files uploaded here will be archived forever unless you decide to delete them so they'll never get lost or changed. As far as hotlinking from other sites that aren't meant for that purpose you really should ask the site owner, the other thing to be aware of is a site owner like myself can serve a different image for hot linked images and you won't be aware of it.

If for example you visit a site the image gets cached on your computer, if you hot link that image the site owner only has to check the referrer to see if it's being served from the sites web pages. If not you can serve no image or even replace it with another one which could be anything. The person hot linking won't even be aware that its happening because the original image is cached on their computer.

A lot of people from myspace and those sites will hot link images, what I've done in the past is have a little fun with them and serve a 1X32000 px transparent.gif Since they never specify the image size in the HTML this will cause most layouts to go to at least 32000 px wide (e.g. they'll get a vertical scroll that is very long) . Since they have the image cached they don't realize the layout is broken and once they do there is no visual way to tell why. The hot linked image will not cross their mind since its long after since they hot linked to it. I'm sure many of them have spent the better part of day if not days trying to figure out what the hell happened.

-----------------------

FYI although you can't delete or edit posts after 24 hours old files can be managed through your control panel if you want to delete them but again I'd prefer they stay archived for future reference.

I"m a member of another forum to do with my business. We had to stop allowing hot links as several times the photo changed to something X-rated.

File size limits? I thought it said "Fuel size limits". I was expecting this to go pea nut stove in a hand fed. :)

Exactly... at some point in the future I'll probably have to purge the database of all images hot linked to a lot of these sites as they become unavailable and/or domains switch hands but that's a simple find and replace.

Edit: Removed the images and link to the post but here's a screenshot, the full text is the image with the shadow. They must have removed them entirely because I was able to obtain the file dimensions originally. I do this to prevent things such as replacement of images that will break layouts.

BTW just a reminder, images are subject to copyrights too.
