got a ? not really coal related but combustioneer related

ok i wont to build a pig spit and am looking for a gear reduction box ive got 2 combustioneer 77s for parts so my ? is what is teh gear reduction on the gear box

I can't double check right now, but seem to recall it being like 100:1.

Yes, that's what I recall.

Even slower if you use a chain to connect the gearbox to the Spit with a small chain sprocket on the gearbox, and a larger sprocket on the spit.

The spit needs to have strong bearings, and be removable for putting through the animal carcase,

I would make the sprocket on the outside of the spit bearing, so you could lift the opposite end of the spit, which would provide slack
in the chain, allowing easy removal of the chain, then lift the spit off the bearing support columns..

I helped build several BBQ rottissery [sp?] setups years ago, but don't have any photos.

The only problem with pulleys and belts is the grease from the pig can splatter on the belt and make it slippery and loose traction in the pulleys.. If you put up a grease splatter shield, maybe even just a large piece of aluminum to shield the belts it should work.

I've read that the combustioneer gearbox is a bit fragile. I have an Iron Fireman stoker, and the gearbox for that auger and stoker is tough, very overbuilt, I can't imagine it stripping any gears or having any problems..

If you have access you might try looking at an Iron Fireman gearbox, it has a three step pulley on it if you wanted to change the speed at the BBQ location.

There's a shear pin to protect the gear box. If you're not sure if it's the right type, you could replace it just to be safe because nails, hard wire and bolts are sometimes used in a pinch, then forgotten about and never replaced with the proper one.
