Stoker Controls, Old School

Stoker Controls, Old School

PostBy: Matthaus On: Sun Nov 18, 2007 11:57 am

Well I started to clean up the garage a bit today since it was snowing outside. I just realized I have started a stoker control collection!

The units feature a timer motor and some way to set up minimum burn. Some can be hooked to Tstats, some have mercury switches to act as a relay! One is an old style Honeywell Mercury aquastat.

So here are a few pics for your amusement.

I have a flow gauge for a swimming pool filter system that was built sometime in the 1920's, it uses mercury as the indicator. It's from a YMCA. We sell them pool chemicals, etc. There's a newer filtration system there, so I swiped the gauge. They also used to have several huge coal boilers in place, not used anymore, they had been fitted with oil burners. A newer boiler was nearby, doing the work. They used the steam from the boilers to heat the pool, with a heat exchanger. The boilers have been since removed, but I did snag 2 pressure gauges. I'll post some photos later today.

Flow meter used on the inside swimming pool at the YMCA in Passaic, NJ up until the new filtration system was installed about 8 years ago. Mercury is held in a tank at the bottom and rises up the tube as the flow increases. This unit is all cast and is heavy.

My digital camera is an early Polaroid, some shots are not too clear. I'll use my wife's Nikon for detail pics in the future.

Actually I was planning on hanging on to them since they are old school, I do have some information on newer versions that are pretty cheap from Grainger. Give me a call tonight (I PMd you my number in case you lost it). :)
