My dad has a 1954 Highboy from Scrapper. It runs like it was made in 2012.

My first winter with a 520 and it has been working like a champ after a couple of new operator errors were ironed out. A big thanks to Scrapper for the stoker and pot rebuild and to Rob R. and J.C. for helping me through my operator errors. Wish I had done this many years ago.

I bought mine new, but I would not hesitate to by a used one. They are a great product. They are even idiot proof.

I felt guilty not doing anything to mine this winter (the daughter takes the ashes out), so I thought I would do some preventive maintenance. I turned it off , canceled the autodialer and proceeded to brush the interior of the firebox.

The next morning I woke up and thought wow it feels cold in here. A lightbulb went off in my head, awe s...... (it was 7 F outside). I ran downstairs and threw the boiler switch, as a what do I have to lose, while I get the charcoal ready. I turned around and was surprised to see a fire already in the peep hole.

Over 10 hours being off, and still maintained a fire. I guess it's true you don't need the outfire timer in the winter, so long as you have a good chimney draft!

I once forgot to turn the power back on to my EFM for 11 hours...just like you, it slowly recovered. This is the flame that I saw peak through the ash:

You're welcome. I couldn't be happier since I started heating my house with an EFM. I have Dave O'Neil to thank for the DF520 in my basement. I needed it on short notice and he came through and dropped it in my basement. It was below zero the day he showed up, and I was sure glad when it sat proudly in the basement. For all of you EFM tough-guys out there, I can say that five of us set the boiler on the base by hand.

My Uncle Steve joined the ranks of EFM owners this December when we fired up his DF520. He bought it from Stokerscott (Scottscoaled) last fall, and it has been running like a Rolex ever since we lit the match.
