LsFarm is right. According to the instalation manual that is open to install then should be closed off. Maybe it is laying in the hollow area of the baffle. When that is closed off I'll bet your stove will run just fine.

So how did the insert burn overnight and during the day,? Did you just turn down the spinner to a much lower setting and let it stay just 'warm' insted of hot? Did you get the coverplate installed over the open port?

Here's the update. (Sorry it took a while, work's been hectic.) The dealer I purchased the stove from (Duvall's) called Tuesday to see if the chimney sweep had fixed the problem yet. I said they would be out Thursday but they seemed to be confused about the plate. He (Duvall's) stopped out at my house a couple of hours later, found the plate slid over in the baffle and sealed it up. Since then it has been working great. I've had it open between 1 and 1.5 turns and the temperature inside has never fallen below 73. My wife complained this evening that it was like a sauna in here. :D It was 75. Burn times seem to be right around 12 hours. The outside temps have not fallen back in the low 20s yet. It's 39 outside at the moment and was in the high 40s during the day today. So, we'll see how it does when (if) it gets really cold. But, the plate seems to have made all the difference in the world. The chimney sweep did offer to give me a free cleaning/sweep to make up for the trouble. That made me feel better about it. At this point I'm just happy to have a coal insert working the way I hoped. Thanks again to all that helped!!!

Alright!! That's great news.. and it sounds like you have a Harman dealer that knows what customer service is all about.

Terrific news that it is burning as it should!!! Have fun staying warm and hearing the wife complain about having to wear shorts in the winter!

Some guys on here burn pea coal rather than nut coal and that allows them to burn at a lower temp. The smaller size coal has less air space between the nuggets so it burns slower and lower. That may help during the milder days to keep the feedback from the spousal unit at a minimum. I've been known to have windowstats activated at our house in Dec /Jan sometimes! You can have fun mixing the nut and pea to get the right recipe.

Duvalls definitely knows the product line.

Since the first burn you had was a good one I am thinking the plate was in place, but not tight and shaking it down rattled it out of place so the subsequent loads didn't burn correctly. Just my theory- worth about 2 cents!!
