I posted this topic in the venting section but thought I would get more answers here. I wasn't sure how to move a post so I just re-posted this topic here.

I have a Coal Chubby and find that when I have the MPD completely closed that I need open my air intake almost 100% to get the stove up to temperature. But if I open my MPD about 10% then the stove reaches temperature with the air intake open about 25%. Anyone else run into this issue or is this normal? I do find the coal to last a lot longer with the MPD completely closed!

This would be normal, everyone situation is going to be differant with chimney draw, but you can't get air in if it can't get out ;) , so if you really need to crank the stove you have to open the damper some.

Eric is right that there is no true normal. It's all a given situation but yes, you would certainly save coal/heat with the damper closed versus open. Yes the stove will come up to temp or back from reload faster open but in my case at least on my cookstove, I hardly ever open the MPD unless it's to start the stove from scratch. That stove just seems to get warmer faster (after reload) with the damper closed. My other cylinder stove likes the indirect and MPD open after a reload for fastest recovery. It's just about learning your given situation and stove and what it likes best.
That's why I'm called the Stove Whisperer & Paleostoveologist. ;)
