Chubby coal stove doing me well.

As do I with the Glenwood. I got home for a week on the road and it was about 50 in the house and looking like it's going down to 27 tonight. Next few days are well within the range of the stove on so I broke down and lit er up. That was 2 hours ago. It's close to 70 now and the stove is only 300 degrees.

keeping my chubby going 24 hours a day now. I have to start a new fire every night because i am away from home for 12 hours. Going to do some different things in the next few days and see what happens.

ChubbyCoalBoy, what was your experience with the Jotul 507? How does the heat output, surface temp, and burn rate compare between the chubby and the Jotul? I just got a Jotul 507 and had our first really cold morning this morning. The Jotul is downstairs, floor vents and small fan in vent blowing air up into living area. The Jotul was chugging along at 500 degrees (measuring middle loading door) on damper setting of 2 1/2, but upstairs was only 66 degrees. How hot did you run yours, and on what bottom damper setting? I'm afraid to push it above 500ish, should I let it rip higher? I'm wondering if the Jotul doesn't have the power to heat 1800 sq foot raised ranch, even with the floor vents and fan. I'd love to hear your experience.

Hi JR, It's been a few years since i ran my 507. If you are burning anthracite coal, open the top dial 1.5 turns or so. middle dial leave closed. bottom dial 1.5 to 2.5.
500 degrees is good. Don't go any higher. The 507 was rated at 5000 cubic feet which is around 1149 sq ft. My house is around 900 sq ft. When it got below 10 degrees out side. The hightest temp inside would be about 65 degrees. The first floor of my house is not insulated but the second floor is. I would have to start a fresh fire each night and in the morningabout 5-6 am put in a little coal in and fire would be going out when I got home about 6:30pm. I own 2 507's and they are in storage. The reason I went for the chubby was because it is a larger stove and will keep my house warmer in the 70's in the lower temperatures. Like in the below 0 weather. The last few years I have been using wood stoves rated around 1500 sq ft. And kept my house warm in sub zero weather. But the only problem in my case. I live alone and am away at work for over 10 hours a day. Wood needs to be loaded every 4 hours. So this way with coal goes a lot longer. Last winter when I hooked up the chubby, my furnace never went on as like the 507. You will find that with coal you will get around a 18 hour burn time.
The top dial of the 507 is used to burn off gases. The middle dial is only used if your burning coke or bituminous coal or peat. The bottom dial is used to adjust temperature of the stove. You will find when it gets really cold out side you will have to use your furnace also to help out to keep the house warm where you have 1800 sq ft. to heat. If you ever get the chance to get your hands on a chubby coal stove, grab it. It will heat Your house no problem. It is rated up to 9000 cu.ft. I hope that helps you out. OD good so far. But still have to start a fresh fire every night. I get home at 7 pm and fire is about out. Just a few coals going. So I start a new fire shortly after going good about 11 pm and when I get up in the morning still going good add some coal about 6 am and good for the day.When I get a good cold weekend I'm going to try shaking it in the morning and see what happens later in the night around 7 and see if coals are still going. I'll let you know if it works. I had talked to Larry about this also.

CCB I'm also curious how goes the burn times. One of the things that made a big difference for me last year when I was burning more often was to 'pick' the grates from below - along with shaking. Doing one or the other is not going to work - at least from what I have observed.
Sorry if this is just repeating what others may have already told you but just trying to offer hints.
The other thing is - once the coal is starting to get going - before you leave for the day - close the air intake down to about 1/8th inch or less - and close mpd.
The should purr along at 350ish while you are gone for the day.

Some of the mistakes I made - Larry addressed in an addendum - where folks were letting the whole burn pot get glowing before reducing mpd and intake air.
He likened this to burning 600,000 btus all at once (as I recall). Once the epiphany hit me - I was getting upwards of 12-15hrs easily.

Yes, what is said above about the glowing pot, and for a longer burn time "holding the fire" as Larry told me, heap up the coal and close the primary air completely if no body is home to feed the stove. Can last a very long time 24+ hours.

Ok here is the new install of my Chubby. Just have to do a little clean up now and all set to fire up when it gets cold. Added a new liner in the chimney, raised up the flue a few feet to get better draft and added a barometric damper.

Nice job on the hearth, that is going to be my next project getting a hearth and all fuel chimney done and getting my pellet stove out of basement and into my living room.

Lobsterman, the only problem with closing it down all the way. There won't be enough heat from the stove to keep the house warm and the furnace would go on.
I keep the thermostat at 60.
