Where I live, I can't imagine having that problem. They would be far more likely to come in and steal my copper piping than take my coal.

In areas where anthracite is still king, your question is actually a quite good one! I just happen to live in an area where people are more likely to be terrified by coal than to desire it enough to steal it.

LIKE AA130FIREMAN SAYS; Too much work for the thief. Sure isn't fast easy money. It'd take a while. If I ever caught someone stealing some of my coal, I'd assume they fell upon hard times. And are desperately trying to keep thier family warm. And if that's the case (I'd verify), most likely I would call my supplier, and have some coal shipped to thier home. I don't believe in kicking someone when they're down. To answer your question; I'm not concerned about locking my coal bin. Oliver

No lock and no coal bin just a pile. At $85 a ton they have to work hard to hurt me much.

Well up in these parts where the coal runs $300 a ton plus, I have noticed two things. Since I moved my boiler to inside my locked garage and have the bin next to it, it seems that i no longer go outside and look at my bin and think that there was alot more coal there yesterday than there is today ;) The second , and I'm sure they are not related, my neighbor is all of a sudden buying pallets of coal with his truck. I never knew he had a coal burner :o

Maybe we're the only one who has had coal stolen?
Our farm has been used as a weekend place most of the 42 years it has been in the family. Until I installed a gas furnace 10 years ago, we heated with but in a gravity coal furnace. Every few years, Dad would have a few tons of coal delivered, in a pile outside the coal chute. ( I don't know why not IN the coal chute.) One day when the road was snow covered, Dad caught the neighbor's kids loading their sleds with our coal! They said that their parents had sent them. I guess they were poor, but they were the kind of people who could have bought a lot of coal if they would have sold all the junk vehicles on blocks in their yard, or scrapped all the mufflers they removed from every vehicle they owned.

Its not the worst thing to have had stolen. Better than the furniture, light fixtures, copper, taxidermy, and booze that have walked away over the years. Much better than the bank barn who's siding now grace's some criminals game room or kitchen table. I can't believe they stole our barn!

No people around me can burn buckwheat, so my pile is safe for now.

I have had problems with my wood pile shrinking in years past. I have thought about putting in a security camera but didn't want to spend the money to catch someone stealing wood.

You need CSI type evidence or catch them red-handed anymore to convict someone. Take a shot at them and you will be the one going to jail.

I have had the crosshairs on peoples asses when they bent over to steal my vegetables out back or steal the pumkins off the roadside stand at night. They don't know how close they came. Worst part is having to see these people face to face and act civil.
