I agree fred. Especially on a 3 year old insert. Standing behind thier product after 3 years of burning coal, I would consider that unheared of. One year would be the norm in New York. Another Plus For Hitzer.

What off season cleaning and storage preparation was done?? That's pretty bad.. Looks like it was constantly damp all summer and still had fly ash or coal stored in the hopper all summer..

Glad Hitzer is replacing it,

I store the coal inside my attached garage .. so it was pretty dry. Never heard the sizzle sizzle pop pop of moisture.

I clean it out right after the stove goes out every season so I don't have ash sitting there ... so its empty & vacuum it out right away .. yeah, pretty bad .. like I got iron termites !

That steel looks like the steel that I tried using to make special air vents in my hand fed boiler..
The steel ran red hot for weeks, then it would fall apart.. the carbon got cooked out of the steel, or something like that.

I could literally break pieces off with my fingers..

Have you had the fire burn up into the hopper from a leaking gasket on the hopper door?? the coal in the hopper should NEVER be burning.. the red coal should be below the hopper by several inches or layers of coal..

Have you tried burning Bituminous coal in this stove and hopper??

Or have you burnt wood in the stove without removing the hopper ??

That hopper is in the condition it's in because of overheating.. and being directly in a HOT fire.. that's not rust corrosion.

Yep, I'd have to agree w/ that being some real hot, real long wood burning. My new(3 yrs old) hopper/ boot doesn't have even a scortch on it. Be glad Dean has sense of humor. ;) The one that I removed from my stove looked exactly like that & he burnt wood as his primary heat source. He moved on to an outdoor wood burner. Never got the knack of coal.

The front lower edge of my hopper gets to glowing with a moderately hot fire and it still looks like new except for a little surface rust along that edge. I agree with greg. The cabon has been cooked out of the steel. That is why very low carbon steel like concrete reinforcement rod doesn't last long in an outdoor (cooking) fireplace.

Never burned bit (not allowed anyway local EPA regs)
Never burnt wood
Never had fire in hopper
I have seen flames flicker on it from burning coal just below on the outside ... this should be normal I think
