No smell from coal in my experience..

But I'm concerned that you are planning on installing a Coal AND WOOD hand fired appliance..

Please share your intensions for what you are going to buy and install.. There are a lot of good coal appliances but few good wood and coal appliances.

PLEASE don't buy a US Stove product unless you have a desire to do a lot of tinkering to get it to burn right, and you must have a very good, tall chimney as well.

I would be happy to share what I am thinking of buying and look forward to your comments on this. It will be installed in an open basement to heat the house from below, just trying to keep it simple. There is a dealer just 20 miles from.

That stove is a modern clone of a 1970's Riteway #37.

The original Riteway had no spinners at all.
The spinners could be handy for limited usefulness sometimes. The bi-metallic temperature controller will do the majority of the job.
Spinners may help if burning wood or even soft coal, but for hard coal...maybe helpful only before shake downs & when recharging.

Overall should do a fine job burning anthracite or wood...one of the few stoves that will do both well.
