I've heard it often referred to as--wait for it-- "THE MAGICAL MAGNIFYING MIND" could all this be an attempt to help the home owner & in time cut the cost a little. Yes, I'm reading some are freaked out about higher rates and others not noticing any increase???? Let's all get into the gloom & doom mode like so many people seem to enjoy. This is a GREAT country & I think some people are in thier own peculiar way, maybe trying to help. Just one old farmers thoughts. I do know one thing--I'm getting sick of the fanatics, whichever side of the coin they think they are doing a service. You are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

A kero lantern, and you still pay $60/month?
I think my smart meter is about to become faulty.

Another popular use for them is to assess the potential for just who might be running a small business out of their home in an area where such is not permitted due to zoning restrictions. The ultimate name of the game for smart meters is control.

Any meter would tell them who is using a whole lot more electric, smart or not. What it can do is pin point if the problem is with your house or your neighborhood.

How many honest, reputable people are running a large enough business in an area where you shouldn't be that would be using a noticeable increase on KW hrs.??? Come on, let's be realistic. Like stated, any meter will pick up usage.Sooo, lets add paranoia to gloom & doom

The implications of Smart Meters from a legal perspective, as first published in Chicago-Kent Law Review, Vol. 86, Issue 1 (2011):

To remotely read your meter is a legitimate function which will save the power company money which of course they will pass on to consumers.
Any other function will increase complication and cost. That they are anxious to do this implies another way to make money from collected information. I don't think it will help in trimming trees, the function they seem least competent to do and which is the greatest threat to reliability.

That's it, I now have a mission in life. I'm going to turn on & off things at super odd times with no rhyme or reason & see if they come to change out my smart meter, people if we stick together we can do this. I'll go so far as to brush my teeth by hand (Fred, don't worry about that one) heck I may move back to the city where I can find a lot of feb or like minded females & fool then by showering together even if we don't have an electric hot water tank. Let the meter figure that one out if it's so smart. If someone would really be that interested in when & why I do the things I do that use electric just ask, it would save a lot of money & they could put back my dumb old meter.
