Obama's EPA has crushed coal plants

I totally agree about the gas prices, they are capping some wells rather than producing hoping that the price will go up & in doing so it will more than likely cause the price to rise.

The idea of closing coal plants is the goal of increasing the energy rates. The increased electrical rates need to be on the SAME energy cost levels produced by Wind Energy. Wind Energy is EXPENSIVE and a SCAM. The Production Tax Credits are running out on Wind by the end of the year. They cant subsidize down the cost of Wind Energy enough to equal that of coal energy so closing coal plants will be the only way to "equal" the playing field.

The old plants that are closing due in part to the new mercury standards will reduce deposition rates here in the US 1% to 10% resulting in the average IQ increasing 2/1000 of one point......... at at least if you want to go by EPA figures.

Luckily the EPA does not have to deal with the real world of epidemiology and statistical power of studies. To differentiate that difference in the population study groups with a 95% confidence interval my back of the envelop calculations means we would have to test the entire planet Earth and about 15 other worlds of the same populations assuming we can find a placebo control and assuming there as not a multimodal interference between planets. How about looking at the planet Krypton. Of course you can't even measure IQ that closely except Obama supporters are statistically very close to zero. Idiots.

If there are designs for home-size nuclear power electric generators, how come someone hasn't come up with an efficient home-size coal electric generator?

It's working......... It was around this time last year NG broke trough the cost barrier on coal. Note the huge surplus at that time.

Actually it's been discussed here, I recall at least one topic a few years back and Yanche had posted in it. The issue was not the cost of production but other factors like the cost of building the generator. You need to convert the coal energy into something you can use to drive a mechanical device.... steam. From there the cost of building a generator for one individual is a lot and you're going to run into the same issue as renewables which is storage of that electric.

Before I retired we were working in the Boiler House which also had two gas generators + the boilers, we had to take a brake when they had to turn some goggle valves & I found a article about small efficient steam turbines in Popular Science. When the engineer came to approve our walkway design I showed it to him, they had several steam pipes that were always letting excess steam off the boilers. Anyway the next year we put a double platform in for two turbines & I heard they added at least two more, don't recall how many KWs they produced but it must be pretty good if they went with it & all off of steam they normally wasted.

I'm sure that Alpha buying out Massey (which was found guilty in the deaths of miners) & now deciding to focus on the more lucrative metallurgical coal has nothing to do with it. Just like buyouts in any business they them streamline their operation & close the marginal parts.

Glad you're a fan of the coming 25 cents a kw hr., I guess you have your own EPA approved kerosene well for lighting.

Dann, it's cheap NG, bottom line those coal fired power plants have already been replaced. You don't seem to cry about the steam locomotives, the irons that they heated on their coal stoves, rotary dial telephones that even had a cord attached & I'll bet you even use battery operated tools once in awhile. While I do agree that the NG prices will go up it will be due to the free enterprise that you so cherish, much of the NG is controlled by big oil, they see it coming. If those horse farts you like are anything like cows they too may soon be a source of power. That's where some of mine comes from & they are building another, soon they may wake up & use sewage plants the same way that way you'll be paying for it going & coming.

That's only part of the issue Sam. When the NG rates come back up any plant that was recently closed will not come back online because the retrofit for the mercury standards is not worth it, No new plants will be built that don;lt start construction by March because of the CO2 caps. That's the bottom line. As I previously posted it was last year at this time natural gas dipped below the cost of coal, see the red line. Where it's been, wah tit did and most imporatantly where it's heading into the heating season.
