You may get a better response from a wood burning stove forum. While there is a page for that and there are lot folks who have burned wood for a long time here, mostly everyone burns coal and that's the focus. Have you looked at coal as a home heating fuel? You should check out some of the basic pages here and see what you are missing. Good luck, Lisa

I would not have a stove that doesnt have a removable ash pan with a grate.

For coal I like the corrosion resistance of cast iron. For wood I would prefer steel which will better resist the frequent temperature fluctuations of a wood fire. Lopi and Quadra Fire make good stoves. Bear in mind though that to achieve high efficiency they have to run hot. I would not consider any of the older stoves that lack the special secondary air features of modern stoves.

steffy, I agree 100% w/ franco b--I take it you have good access to wood. I burnt it for 40 yrs before switching over to coal & will never look back. Even with price increases, I'm only spending $7-800.00 a yr to heat this 200 yr old farm house. Keep us posted my friend. ;) Have a Happy Easter PS--my Hitzer 50-93 cost me $500.00 used 4 yrs ago & I still see them on craigs list for reasonable$$$--NUT Blaschack is going for $250.00 per ton around here
