Yes, they can be problematic if not installed correctly. You have to lube up that O-ring before dropping the elbow on the adaptor. Use something like PAM.

Freddy wrote:If not already mentioned.... When you check the air pressure in the tank it need to be done with the water turned off and all water pressure relieved from the tank. The air pressure should be two pounds lower then the switch cut in pressure. That is, if your pressure switch is 30-50 the air pressure should be 28. Here's a pretty good article: http://inspectapedia.com/water/Water_Ta ... Adjust.htm

$500 electric bill? Yikes! I'd be shutting off the circuit breaker until this is resolved.

I can't even check the air pressure since none of my tire gauges dit the valve. The new switch I picked up this morning is a 40/60 switch. I'll swing by the depot and pick up some more copper to redo the riser. Does height really matter? Because my riser is about 2' and my pressure switch actually sits about 4-6" off the top of the tank.

Pictures...
The riser is a nipple...
Brass, plastic, steel...
Threaded...
Regular tire gauge has worked looks like a stick...
Is the air valve blocked by something...

The Tee should be coming out of the bottom of the tank. The Pressure Switch & gauge and drain valves all come off the Tee. See pic below...

Mine comes out the bottom of the tank but then the pipe runs up the wall and the switch is actually mounted above the tank.

The tire gauge doesn't fit the valve coming off the tank because the gauge is bigger than the stem of the valve coming off the tank. The tire gauge is wider than the stem on the tank. When I put the gauge down on the stem the air pushes out the side of the gauge and I get no reading.

Oh boy.... now you have let some pressure out. ... Hopefully, you didn't let much air escape...
What is the make/Model and year of your tank?

The valve stem should be a std. car stem...
But just like a car stem the bottom can brgin to dry rot...
Are you sure the rubber is good on the stem...
wiggle it a bit see if it leaks...
if it is leaking or you let too much air out...
you got some work to do...

The stem coming out of thebtop of my tank is metal. Welded in place with a schrader valve in it. I didn't even have the gauge on for a second. I put it on, noticed it didn't fit and took it off.

So what happens if too much air out? Does it explode? Disintegration?

As for make and model, I believe it's an Amtrol 25 gallon. It's old, blue metal. I don't know the model number off hand. Looking at Amtrol's website it might be a 20 gallon WX-202. But I'm not 100% positive. Seems Amtrol uses weld in stems and factory pre-sets them to 38#.

Also looking at the cut sheet for the 202 it seems as though my pressure switch is in fact too far from the tank. Like I said, my switch is mounted above the tank. The riser comes off the tank then goes about 2' up the wall and the switch sits on the top of the tank, not at the bottom.

If you take too much air out, the tank becomes water logged and the pump will short cycle. The purpose of the air cushion is to give you some water volume to prevent the pump from cycling on every time you get a glass of water. Too much air pressure the same problem occurs in that the pump will shut off before the tank bladder extends.

There should be O&M info on the web site on how to check the air pressure and how to set the air pressure. The air pressure in the tank will depend on the range your pump control switch is set at.

I edited my post above. I downloaded the cutsheet for the 202 which os the tank I have. Now I need to find a gauge that fits and an air chuck that fits. I also need to drop my riser down to the lower side of the tank. So much for a possible cheap and easy fix. Now I need pipe, wire (cause I have no more 12/2). Plus, there is no guarantee this will even fix my pump running issue.

For the time being, mount the new pressure switch where the old one is located. Just make sure the nipples aren't clogged. I don't see any reason why that shouldn't work,

I just confirmed with my wife we do have the Amtrol WX-202 Well-X-Trol 20 gallon tank. The cutsheet for it says that the switch should be close to the tank to prevent pressure differential and the pump from running.

i have installed a dozen well x trols and never saw anything different than a good ole bike / car type schrader
iv'e been tought to set the pressure 2 pounds lower than the switch high limit and use the 40/60 mostly...

i ave always located the brass or black iron 3" nipple in the tee portion of the lower inlet of the tank. usually sold as a kit when you buy the tank
kit has....long bronze tee,guage,check valve,overpressure blow off,drain cock valve,riser,and pressure switch........

if someone installed a long remotely plumbed pressure switch well ok i guess but the point is that it needs to "really squirt water" into the new pressure switch..

the failure of the pitless adaptor o ring i spoke of was in a situation where the switch stuck the pump on till the o ring blew and the water was just coming up the well pipe and falling back down.... the owner never knew cause the well was 30 ft from the house..... water pressure just got worse over a few days till it was easier for the water to blow back down the well than into the house.
i have also seen that pitless adaptor freeze and split!! years after install....just a wee bit above the frost line so point of story is relax.....just diagonois it methodically....i.e., guage drops to "on" pressure...pump comes on....guage rises....switch sees that pressure and then shuts off.....

Eagle,

I understand that. I'm going to just put the switch in as it is for now and see if anything changes. But, based off of Angel's website it seems that they are being made now with a weld in schrader valve. So, my tank isn't that old I guess. I'm goimg to change the switch then work my way back to the pump. If it does turn out to be the pump then I'll redo the switch and replace the pu.p at the same time.

My new pump arrived today. Its big, bad, all stainless steel, and MADE IN THE USA!

It took 2 weeks to make it and a week to ship it, but well worth the wait. ;)
