You should look over David 78's thread on his Splendid Oak. You might learn a lot about your Stewart Oak. Maybe someone will be nice enough to put a link to the thread here so you can find it easier. Make sure you ask questions as you go along. We are here to make sure that baby gets done right.

Yes william your right, I want this to turn out beautiful. Im going to start tearing it down this week. I gotta find a place to get the nickle done though. Ive had no luck yet finding someone local.

RLB what parts do you want to have nickel plated? Is it to get the stove in the original condition (look) or you simply decided to nickel the parts you wanted to be.
On my Golden Bride I didn't have all the plating done as originally, the bill rises quite fast :!:

i have alot of parts i want nickeled. the base,finial,top ring,bottom fancy ring,2 side pieces next to door. ive been thinking about the doors as well. not sure if doors will be overkill though. for all i listed it was 500.00 not polished and 1000.00 polished. ill polish it my self..lol

You want the historically correct nickel. I don't know the details but you can find out about it. There is a more modern, "Bright Nickel," that looks more like chrome. It won't look right on the stove. You want to tell them you want the old fashioned, "dull nickle," You have to polish the traditional nickle and is has a much warmer shine to it.

yes william your right. ive seen restored stoves and the nickle looks chrome. i prefere the dull look and think the real shinny chrome look makes the stove look like a reproduction or something like that. im gonna talk to the guy doing the nickle about that issue.

When I looked for infos on nickel plating, I concluded that brand new nickel on antique stoves was clear shining looking, not a dull aspect. Dull aspect arrives after years of heating and probably not cleaned correctly.
The guy where I have mine done asked me if I wanted the antique aspect or mirror finish? I asked him the differences and he told me that the antique finish is when he lets all the cast iron original imperfections on the metal and the mirror one is when he fills all the small hole and imperfections to get a mirror like finish, not a dull one.

You want mirror finish as was originally done. A lot more work as any pits have to be ground and polished out before plating. Two identical stoves could have much different prices to plate owing to the before plating work.

Usually when plating nickel (or Chrome for that matter) they start with a coat of copper that smooths the surface. That's followed by the nickel which is fairly soft in the decorative type. The difference that people notice is usually due to the plater applying a flash of chrome for durability. Decorative Chrome plating itself uses bright nickel underneath. Original decorative nickel plating had no flash chrome.

I just talked to the guy at the nickel plating shop about the subject.
He told me that chrome was not before 1900. Then in some fast places the didn't polish the nickel finish so it was not that much shining and having a gray/dull aspect. More polising means more shining. But no chrome adhere to nickel.
Usually they aply copper then nickel. The mirror finish means they removed imperfections on the cast iron molding and antique finish is when these imperfections still on.
On my last parts, there were very deeply rusted parts so they had to apply a coat of copper then repaired these small "holes" or imperfections then made the surface smooth and apply the final nickel plating on.
Chrome finish is having a "blue" look and nickel is more on the "yellow" side

That's right Pierre. The bright nickel is what makes the decorative chrome shiny. Hard chrome is a dull blue and they only flash it on the nickel for decorative chrome.

Getting ready to set up my 270 so a question. In the windows of RLBs stove is drilled holes, I don't see any other way of introducing secondary air like the upper wheel on my Jotul 507. So is this desirable?
