In addition water softeners will remove some iron from the water, if you have iron in the water big time you'll need to address it separately. Iron is moderate here, the softener get most of it. Every so often I have to clean the resin bed with chemicals that remove the iron residue.

Thanks, Pierre. I do have high iron in my water but I've never noticed any particles in it. I'll do the chlorine thingy tonight, I think I have paper cups somewhere I can use.

I'll check that. Somehow I doubt it's a Moen but one never knows.

So, last summer I had my water tested. I thought I had thrown the report away but my wife just informed me we still had it. So, here are the numbers.

Hardness (Lime) - 14 g.p.g.
Iron (Rust) - .4 p.p.m.
pH (Acid) - 6.2 [There is a hand written note next to this one that says: {LOW} no idea what that means.]

So, what does all this mean? Cause, I've no idea. Are these numbers bad?

Oh yeah, if I was going to buy or have the softner system installed by the company that did the test the grand total for it would've been: $7809 + $450 install fee - $100 coupon. = $8159

They have on the "Recommendations" section:

So, that's why the whole thing got shelved. That's a lot of money that at the time, I didn't have...and still don't have.

I think you will find the hardness of the water is a lot higher then that, the sample was taken when it was at a low point. It tends to vary.

The test was conducted on 8/20/2011 (My birthday) and just nine days later Hurricane Irene rolled through and put me under a few thousand gallons of water.

The test was conducted by Portasoft.

Do you have problems with things corroding from the acidic water?

14 gpg is not too bad, but still enough to cause lime buildup. Our water is 22 gpg and you know very quickly if the softener is out of salt. You can get a softener like mine for about $600 and hook it up in an afternoon.

It seems that lately; since last summer we've been running into more and more buildup than we have in the past.

That's the plan, if I can find one that'll do the job cheaper than what Portasoft quoted it'd be great. Just don't know what to get.

The hardness went sky high here after the hurricane and tropical storm last year.
