D-Day Anniversary

D-Day Anniversary

PostBy: Dann757 On: Wed Jun 06, 2012 8:27 pm

I'm the first to admit I'm a chickenhawk. I was with a customer today who is an Armed Forces Vet, forgot to mention D-Day myself.

I remember getting soda and popcorn when "Saving Private Ryan" first came out. In the first 20 minutes we all folded up our popcorn bags and sat there riveted to the theater screen. Half the time I don't really know who the enemy is anymore.

A disgrace....... what else is new???

Obama Not Scheduled to Commemorate D-Day

by Keith Koffler on June 6, 2012, 10:10 am

It's D-Day and President Obama is hitting the beaches -- of sunny California!

Instead of scheduling a brief event to mark the 68th anniversary of America's brutal landing on the shores of Normandy, Obama is already on his way to San Francisco, where he will hold two fundraisers before moving on to Beverly Hills to stage two more.

Obama failed to mark D-Day with either a speech or a written proclamation both last year or the year before. He did give a speech in 2009, the 65th anniversary of the event.

First Lady Michelle Obama, who has made much of her "Joining Forces" campaign to support military families, also has nothing planned for D-Day. She'll be in New York City for a fundraiser and then in Philadelphia to meet with campaign volunteers.

Obama's failure to mark D-Day in any significant way is both a shame and a political mistake.

According to the Department of Veterans' Affairs, two critical swing states -- Florida and Pennsylvania, are among the top five states in terms of veterans' population. Within the top twelve are four others -- Michigan, Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina -- all states Obama desperately needs to carry.

It does seem sad that D-Day isn't often remembered, guess maybe only every fifth year or so & as more Hero's die off it could be gone totally. I know of a few that were there (think they are gone now) but it always seemed to be a day they didn't want reminded of, everyone has their own way of dealing, sometimes we don't want to think back. Don't know if it would help or hurt, it's not even marked on many calendars any more.

It sure makes you understand the bravery they exuded landing under heavy fire, pinned down, nowhere to take cover. The expression "Cowboy up!!" would make them smile today; the few that remain, but as you say, D-Day is a sad chapter for our military folks. All became Hero's by default, and not one swam out to sea to get away from the horror. Tens of thousands from both sides lost their lives that day some 70 years ago, however we can be thankful for what happened on the beaches of Normandy. Not many kids today can speak English well, I wonder how they would do learning German?....or Japanese. Time to once again say a quiet 'Thank-you' to those who gave so much and to those who 'gave all'.  :!:

The very fact that Dear Leader chose not to speak one word to commemorate D-Day is a disgrace.

Why when you figure out what someone is about, would any of his actions or lack of, surprise you. The man was a piece of crap when he took office & continues to excell in that area. Again I have to emphasize--"If you can't dazzle them with your brilliance, baffle them with your bullshit" I beleive that covers the man pretty well. :(

'Silence from the sidelines' speaks volumes about his character. Panetta is in Kabul right now....wonder how that is going? Vietnam Era military guys and gals have a strong desire to make things better, and no sense of humor over the lack of support they received.......I wonder if I could clarify Fred's view of the Poster Boy for 'Clean Coal' who resides in DC? Dam that Fred...he won't ever let us know how he REALLY feels!!! :taz: :mad2: :rambo: :poke:

PS: The rain has finally stopped, my feet are now webbed, and the mosquito's are plentiful! 52 this AM...... Wonder if we should make them the "National Insect" with things going forward as they are....

I will say that Obama did not say or do anything about D-Day & I sit here & read those that trash him & can't help but to wonder how many bothered to look back to see that it seems to be the pattern for at least the past few administrations, how many trashed those Presidents equally or even realized it was the D=Day Anniversary themselves & wouldn't have remembered this one if not for this post or Koffler or another talking head that makes his living doing this, did he also call attention to past Pres.? Once again not saying it's right or wrong just honestly asking, even Google that changes it's logo for just about anything did nothing, IMO once again like on another subject just pure apathy, I wonder when calendars stopped the little notation on the bottom of the day, that's how I normally knew.

Any President who doesn't acknowledge D Day is disgraceful, regardless of political affiliation. The current White House occupant is more concerned with his reelection then with anything else. He is self-centered and egotistical, it's all about him.

Agreed W&C but I kind of asked did you also trash them then or did you honestly also not remember it yourself? I'll be honest & say I didn't realize until I heard a slight mention on the AM news, we tend to forget especially things that we had little involvement in. I posted about Donut Day a short while ago, in reality it's about the Salvation Army & the Donut Dollies & what was done for the troops during war time but apparently no one here knew or cared to comment but because of some personal involvement it's a day that I fondly remember. Doesn't make it right or wrong, just the way it is.

In all honesty, no I don't remember prior years or administrations. I'd have to do research. Sometimes I'm lucky if I can remember what I did last week!

Last Week, I'd be happy to find the pencil that I tucked behind my ear so I wouldn't lose it, my garage is 60X52 & I try to stage tools so one is always just a few steps away at most. Half way thru a project & I can't find anything.

How many really know or care that George W Bush only marked D-Day twice during his eight years in office?

In other words IOKIYAR.
