DVC coal stove

PostBy: shipman266 On: Fri Jun 08, 2012 9:51 pm

Just moved to the adirondacks..... I puchased a home just under 2000 square feet and it comes with a pellet stove. However I want to replace it with a coal stove. I like the hitzer 50-93. Is that a direct vent stove. If not, what is up to par against that stove. I have done alot reading on this forum and just cant make up my mind. If you guys have any good thoughts that could help me out I would appreciate it. The stove I need has to be direct vented.

you will have to get a stoker if you need direct/power vent.

If you want a hand fed like the hitzer 50-93 you need to build a chimney.

If you want to be free of the need of a power vent, do yourself a favor and build a chimney....2 flues to be safe. It will be short money in the long run. The Hitzer will be VERY happy, as will you!
There is the "how reliable is the power grid" where you are going....need for a generator? Well pump, septic pumping system....lighting, refrigeration..................

If you can make it simple, I'd opt for that. If you need to live 'on the grid', perhaps you better consider the other requirements.....for a "Non Mountain Man" life.

my .02.....life isn't that simple, no matter how much we second guess it!

Where in the Adirondacks?

The Hitzer you mentioned is not direct vent capable...in fact, none of the hand-fired coal stoves are - they all require a chimney. Stoker stoves can be power vented, and there is always the option of building a chimney.
