Next week we read from Dr Suess and learn how to play pooh sticks. If you collect the sticks after travelling under the bridge it's a sustainable game you see. I'll probably get the Nobel prize for physics for it. Those prizes are very easy to win these days.

What if the 2008 economic downturn had absolutely nothing to do with which administration or party or President was in office at the time when it happened, and had much to do with our flawed system of fiat money, insane fractional reserve banking, derivatives gone wild, speculation gone wild, massive overspending by one and all, credit card debt, student loan debt, exceptional levels of Wall Street greed, computer trading complete with rampant front running, the Federal Reserve, homes purchased by people who had no chance of making the payments (a mere subset of banking and Wall Street greed), insanely low interest rates, and the like?

Any level of political fault in the above is equally to be shared between the Republicans and the Democrats, as they both created and are both deeply indebted to (OK, owned by) the very monetary and fiscal monster that is destroying us, and they both support it whole heartedly.

Isayre, you left out the little thing about the two tax cuts while going into two wars, all things have something to do with it but that IMO was the deciding factor & we are still stuck with it today. The drug program didn't help much either, whenever they do anything that is left unfunded it's a recipe for disaster & there is plenty of blame to go around both parties. If you were to have your income cut would you go out & spend more to make things better?

the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY..... during the Carter Administration?

Bottom line is, we've spent several hundred billion dollars in
support of an agency....the reason for which not one person who reads this can
remember!

appropriate The Department of Energy was instituted on 8/04/1977, TO LESSEN OUR
DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

"NECESSARY" DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR. IT HAS 16,000
FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES; AND LOOK AT THE
JOB IT HAS DONE!

oil consumption is foreign imports. Ah, yes -- good old Federal bureaucracy.

Dan, anyone around my age or older should remember why Carter made the DOE, we had suffered with an oil embargo that caused more problems than you could imagine, people were killing for gas, many businesses shut down, if you still had a job you couldn't get there you get the picture. That's what caused a much higher rate of inflation & even worse it showed big oil that they could increase profits by reducing supply. They saw that way back then & wanted to start reducing our dependence on oil, naturally big oil didn't want any of that so there Congress(not ours) started morphing the DOE into all kinds of stuff, that part is correct as always. There are always politicians that owe favors & jobs so they create them, in hind sight if we had kept developing alternative energy we would have led the world in energy production & technology rather than playing catch up.
