Hot Linking vs. Uploading

Hot Linking vs. Uploading

Do not upload photos or any files you do not own. The exception is files or photos in the public domain which no longer have copyright or the owner has given permission for reproduction. There is more information here on that:

Quoting and Uploading Copyrighted Material

Hot linking to an image on another server is permissible because the file while being displayed on the pages here is not located on my server. By right clicking an image on any web page and selecting properties or other options like "copy photo location" you can determine the URL for the image itself. Using the bbcode for img you can link embed a photo from another site here:

Code: Select all
[img]http://www.nepadigital.com/images/graphics/poster.jpg[/img]

That will produce this:

I don't want to encourage this practice for a variety of reasons, while legal you are consuming the resources of another site. The other issue is I have no control over that file and it could turn into anything. As matter of fact it could be displayed as here as completely different image than you are seeing. Many sites prevent hotlinking, what will happen is you will download the image when you view the page and it's then in your internet cache. When you post it here the server will serve up replacement image that can be ANYTHING. Since the image is in your cache you see the original and have no idea others are seeing this replacement image which I will emphasize again could be ANYTHING.

Use this feature sparingly and if you do be sure to provide a link to the the source. I would prefer you contact the site owner for permission to hotlink to the images . Also be sure do a true refresh of the page to insure something else is not being served. Hit and hold ctrl and then the F5 key.
