Journalism is dead

Of course we can't be sure what the intentions were here whether it was to "plant a seed" or just another example of shoddy sensationalistic journalism where the entertainment value is more important than facts. These types of incidents are really unacceptable, this reporter needs to be immediately fired. I watched the news conference the Sheriff gave and he alluded to this cautioning the media to be careful what they reported about "social media". I'm not sure what the solution is because any kind government regualtions that would prevent such amateurish and poor reporting would be worse than this problem.

STEPHANOPOULOS: I’m going to go to Brian Ross. You’ve been investigating the background of Jim Holmes here. You found something that might be significant.
ROSS: There’s a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colo., page on the Colorado Tea Party site as well, talking about him joining the tea party last year. Now, we don’t know if this is the same Jim Holmes. But it’s Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colo.
STEPHANOPOULOS: OK, we’ll keep looking at that. Brian Ross thanks very much.

ABC's correction
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/aurora-da ... d=16818889

Editor's Note: An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.

On side note keep this on topic, since we don't have topic about the shooting start a new one if you want to discuss it.

I don't think we needed this to know that Morrow is dead.

Apparently, investigative journalism amounts to Googling a name and reporting the first thing that comes up.

Dead air doesn't go over well. Reporters are under pressure to keep their lips moving.

When Google, the modern high tech version of the magic 8 ball, spit out what could be a link between the tea party and a mass shooting Brian Ross or some editor at ABC probably had an embarrassing case of PE, hell I’ll bet old’ George popped a trouser tent.

Is it not human nature to formulate an opinion and then try to find facts to validate your opinion? I know, I know these are educated professionals who have learned to put aside personal biases and look for and report only the facts so lets not get up on your high horse…by the way I still have this bridge for sale, she’s a beut’ and the price has just been reduced…

Today it's far more important to make news than to report news. No one listens to or cares about retractions. The initial reporting is all that sticks, and therefore all that matters.

Richard beat me to it.

It seems the sole job of the mainstream media today is to smear the Tea Party (because they threaten their objective - getting Obama back in office) & turn every story political. What shitty reporting. A 2nd grader could've done more research.

OK ABC "news" : if we're gonna go there, who do you think is more likely to commit this type of crime? Tea Party people, who are peaceful, RESPECTFUL, ordinary Americans ........ or OCCUPY people who *censored* in public parks, vandalize buildings and make open threats of terrorism that are ignored 100% by the government AND the media???

HMMMMMMMMMMMM ..... that's a tough one!!!

fox news has been the leader in that field for years, and many people still take their garbage as gospel.

Now if you can be honest how many would have run with the story if they would have said the guy had just left a democratic rally or something to that effect? The true is it would make no difference what party this wacko belonged to if any. I don't know what the laws are there but I can't help but to think if there would have been a person or a couple there with a CC weapon & a bit of training behind them a lot of lives might have been saved.

Sam if the person was listed as joining the Democrats or even the Republican party it never airs even after it has been confirmed. The liberal media has been portraying the Tea Party like a bunch of radicals since day 1 and this is just another example.

Then why did ABC proclaim that he appears to be affiliated with the Tea Party?

Were they making the news (fit their agenda), or were they reporting the news?

They, he or she was doing what they all do, read anything & everything that comes across the wire & I would guess it was coming fast & furious. These people aren't journalist, they are pretty or good looking window dressing with a easy to hear voice & something that's becoming increasingly scarce the ability to read. They don't proof read or necessarily even grasp what they read, their mouth is off & running before their brain in gear. You got a bunch of people in a trailer somewhere typing anything they can think of into computers & what comes up goes out & is read.
