The Joe Paterno statue was removed Sunday morning from its pedestal outside Beaver Stadium, and it will be stored in an unnamed "secure location," Penn State president Rodney Erickson announced. Erickson also said the Paterno name will remain on the university's library.

NCAA president Mark Emmert has decided to punish Penn State with severe penalties likely to include a significant loss of scholarships and loss of multiple bowls, a source close to the decision told ESPN's Joe Schad on Sunday morning.

But Penn State will not receive the so-called "death penalty" that would have suspended the program for at least one year, the source said.

The penalties, however, are considered to be so harsh that the death penalty may have been preferable, the source said.

If you're unfamiliar with the "death penalty" this was only used once against SMU . Their football program as a practical matter never recovered. It was widely speculated it would never be used again. The sanctions here would have similar results if not worse if it's multiple years.

I'm from Ohio, but I'm mourning for Penn State right now.

I can see fines & some sanctions perhaps but the death penalty in this case will ultimately punish those that had nothing to do with it. I'm pretty sure that everyone involved is gone so the students & players are going to be punished for something that even if they knew could do nothing about.

It may be punishing the students, but it punishes the school much more.

And I'm still not convinced everyone that knew about it is gone.

In any event, this may prove to other schools that cover ups aren't in their best interest.
